Mercedes bringing back the '73 AMG' badge to denote new 800 horsepower hybrid variants

If you got excited about a potential revival of the 7.3 liter V12 by Mercedes, well, bad news. The new '73' badge will not denote a new V12. Speaking of which, the last time Mercedes used the badge was with the R129 SL73 AMG in 1995 which offered 525 horsepower.

That motor found it way into the original Pagani Zonda.

A new SL73 is not on the way but an S73, GLS73, and G73 AMG are according to trademark filings. However, instead of V12 power they will get an M177 V8 variant with a hybrid drivetrain good for over 800 horsepower.

Is that exciting? Honestly, not as much as a new 7.3 liter V12 with a pair of top mounted twin scroll turbos would be. Why Mercedes-AMG is even using the '73' moniker for a new hybrid AMG platform is a good question.

What you can expect is a production version of the drivetrain Mercedes-AMG teased with the Mercedes AMG GT Concept car:

No doubt it is going to be extremely quick off the line and heavy as well.

Not an appropriate way to revive the x73 moniker. This new powertrain is obviously very advanced and capable of delivering some impressive performance numbers, however they should've just called it the x63 SH for sport hybrid or something.

Agreed. Absurd to use 73 for this.
