YCW Reference Series Coilovers - Sponsored Drivers Required

    Hey Guys,

after researching the various coilover setups currently available on the market, we've noticed there is a gap in the market for a setup that is:

    1) Offers premium real-world features, at an affordable price point
    2) Offers local (North American and European) facilities for rebuild and servicing

there are a lot of generic setups available on the market at the moment, however, they are basically all the same/similar setup (i.e generic) and have not changed over the past 15 years, with prices ranging from $1000-2000; the more expensive only being due to the "brand" and the "assembled in XXX label" rather than the design features (the components are all still manufactured in China, Taiwan or Korea)

of course, rather than reinventing the book, it is best to stick to tried-and-tested designs (especially for the street car) hence why all the current setups available are similar.

because of this "gap", we at MFactory have decided to do what we do best, and this is to provide you guys with a quality solution that meets our #1 priority; Value for Money. Whilst this new project is still in it's infancy, we want to take this opportunity to design, manufacture and offer our solution based on your feedback and not just what the "marketing folks" think you want!

so our project as it stands today:

    YCW Reference Series Coilovers
    - Spec'd for Superior Performance
    - Priced for Affordability
    - Over-Engineered for Comfort & Safety

    FEATURES:

Forged 6061-T6 Hard Anodised Aluminium Front Upper Mounts
    - Strong and Lightweight, our Forged Upper Mounts are Hard Anodised for superior Corrosion Resistance

Forged 6061-T6 Hard Anodised Aluminium Rear Upper Mounts (Where Applicable)
    - Strong and Lightweight, our Forged Upper Mounts are Hard Anodised for superior Corrosion Resistance

High-Tensile Carbon Steel Front Camber & Caster Plate with Anti-Slip Coating (MacPherson)
    - CNC-Machined High-Tensile Carbon Steel supports more load than lesser-quality mounts
    - Camber Angles can be adjusted precisely to your driving needs
    - Where space permits (Application Dependent), Caster Angles can also be fine tuned

Oversized PTFE-Lined Japanese Spherical Upper Mount Bushing
    - Increases shock articulation and prevents coil-bowing
    - Higher load rating for increased durability
    - Minimises knocking noise associated with lesser-quality bearings

Forged 6061-T6 Hard Anodised Aluminium Upper Spring Perch with Sealed Japanese Radial Bearing
    - Strong and Lightweight, our Forged Upper Spring Perches are Hard Anodised for superior Corrosion Resistance
    - High Quality Sealed Japanese Radial Bearing removes rotational stress from the upper mount and is sealed from the elements

62mm ID Cold-Wound Japanese SAE 9254V Chrome-Silicon-Vanadium Steel Linear Springs
    - Custom-made for us in Japan from the highest quality Japanese-grade spring steel, using proprietary manufacturing processes
    - Not all springs are manufactured the same. Lesser-quality, Taiwanese-manufactured springs offer inferior performance and durability
    - Although more expensive, we believe the increase in performance more than offsets the marginal increase in manufacturing costs

    OEM-Balanced Spring Rates
    - The majority of budget coilovers currently on the market offer default spring rates that deviate from the oem-balanced spring rates
    - By not accounting for Motion Ratio Calculations and just replicating race-car setups, this results in a very unbalanced and uncomfortable ride on a Street Car
    - All Reference Series Coilovers are supplied with oem-balanced spring rates, offering you increased performance without sacrificing ride comfort

62mm ID Cold-Wound Japanese SAE 9254 Chrome-Silicon Steel Helper Springs (Application Dependent)
    - Optional Helper Springs can be used to increase droop travel

52mm OD Cold-Drawn Japanese SAE 1020 Seamless Carbon Steel Shock Body
    - Offers superior physical properties and strength-to-weight ratio over lesser manufacturing processes

Black-Zinc Plated Fully-Threaded Shock Body with 250hrs of Salt-Spray Testing
    - Offers superior corrosion-resistance

14mm OD or 20mm OD (MacPherson) Forged SAE 4140 Chromoly Steel Piston Rod
    - Monotube shocks, although offering increased performance over Twintube shocks, have an inherent weakness; a load-bearing Piston Rod
    - Although Inverted Monotube Shocks are touted as the solution, these come with their own set of problems, not least the substantially increased cost of manufacture
    - Our over-engineered solution to the problem, with only a marginal increase in manufacturing costs, is our proprietary Chromoly Steel Piston Rod
    - Offering a substantial increase in tensile strength over lesser-quality rods, not only does this keep costs down, it significantly increases product safety

    Oversized Piston Rod Guide
    - A common issue with the majority of budget coilovers currently on the market is performance-sapping deflection and shaft-play, even after only limited usage
    - Through the use of our proprietary Piston Rod Guide, this minimises deflection and shaft-play, allowing you to reap the performance benefits for a longer period of time

    7-Level Rebound Adjustment
    - Our Reference Series Coilovers allow 7 levels of Rebound Adjustments, allowing you to fine-tune your vehicle comfort and handling
    - Unlike the majority of budget coilovers currently on the market, with their 30+ Level Adjustments, you can physically feel the difference between each adjustment
    - In this particular case, more is not better; it's simply an inconvenience and setup-nightmare

    10cm/15cm/20cm Length Adjustment Extenders (Optional)
    - Designed for vehicle applications with limited access to their upper strut mounts

44mm OD Forged 7075-T6 Hard Anodised Aluminium Digressive-Blow-Off DBO Piston™
    - Over-engineered for superior strength, with anti-stiction and anti-friction properties
    - At lower shock speeds (Cornering), our DBO Piston™ maintains a higher damping force, offering increased responsiveness and stability
    - At higher shock speeds (Bumps), our DBO Piston™ maintains a lower damping force, offering increased comfort and control

Performance Synthetic Damper Oil with High Viscosity Index and Proprietary Additives
    - A proprietary formula providing consistent damping over a wide temperature range and superior anti-stiction/anti-friction properties

    Viton Performance O-Rings
    - Upgraded O-Rings offering better performance and durability than lesser-quality Rubber O-Rings

Forged 6061-T6 Hard Anodised Lower Spring Perch Locking Collar
    - Strong and Lightweight, our Forged Locking Collars are Hard Anodised for superior Corrosion Resistance
    - 1pc Locking Collars, providing secure and hassle-free adjustments

Fully-Threaded Forged 6061-T6 Hard Anodised or High-Tensile Carbon Steel Lower Mount
    - Threaded Lower Mounts allows us to use a longer shock body for increased performance
    - Shock Stroke is unaffected by Ride Height changes
    - Allows an increased Height Adjustment range

PTFE-Lined Japanese Spherical Lower Mount Bushing (Eyelet Type. Optional)
    - Increases shock articulation and prevents deflection
    - Higher load rating for increased durability
    - Minimises knocking noise associated with lesser-quality bearings

Silicone Lower Mount End Caps (MacPherson)
    - High Quality Weather-Proof End Caps for MacPherson lower mounts, preventing water and dirt from entering the the lower shock body

    Weather-proof Neoprene Shock Covers
    - High Quality Weather-Proof Shock Covers, preventing water and dirt from clogging up the shock assembly

Very cool. Could you expand a bit on the spring rates? "10K" and "9K" don't mean much to me; those values would be way too soft for kN/m units--any chance you could post their rates in lbf/in?

Are these true coil overs in the rear? meaning the spring is on the dampener? otherwise the spring rates make no sense. when the springs are put inbound on the control arm it basically cuts the spring rate in half which is why almost any coil over you see for the BMW will have a higher rear spring rate.

yeah, something closer to 700 sounds about right. Not sure why the front would be so much stiffer, 500 up front can't be fun on the street.

^^^ I agree these are cheap coils, probably under dampened over sprung throw a camber plate on it and call it good. The stance kids will love it

I might be open to running those on my project E90 car as I'm still contemplating suspension. But the spring rate thing concerns me. The rate in the rear should be a good bit more than the front. For instance, BC Racing BR coilovers (not that I'm advertising them, but their rates are about right for a performance coilover) comes standard as 8k front and 12k rear. The rear springs are inboard which makes their rate affect the car differently than normal.

10k front is pretty stiff and 9k rear is about as soft as stock.

@brecken: These are not cheap coils, under dampened over sprung throw a camber plate on it and call it good

Although the STANDARD brand (you can actually google STANDARD/STD) is relatively unheard off (compared to for example KW), the manufacturer is not your regular D2/KSport/BC/Silver/Yellow Speed Taiwan company selling cheap generic coilovers. The factory that makes these is a Tier-1 oem supplier, including several famous JDM brands, as well as being one of the suppliers of dampers (not the full kit, just the dampers) for a very famous, world renowned Germany brand of which I can't mention (but you can put 2 and 2 together based on their choice of colours) and, as you can all agree, the dampers are the most important part of a coilover kit. If their quality control was not good, they would not be a Tier-1 oem supplier. Springs can always be changed for a higher quality item in the US such as Swift if you are concerned.

90% of their business is oem. If they have a fault, it is they don't have the same "motivation" to push their own branded product. The owner is an older gentleman, stuck in his ways, and won't really listen to suggestions. But can you blame him if his own-branded product only accounts for 10% of his business?

I think most people on the BMW forums know me by now (well I hope anyway) and would never sell cheap garbage; our motto has always been offering our customers the best "Value for Money", which is what these are, and have been using them on our own race cars for a decade now (albeit Honda's)

Can you get better kits? Of course you can, if you have the money. Even they have high-dollar, custom setups available, but as this is NOT my intended market, I don't see the need to push these. My target market is your regular joe bloggs street car/weekend warrior i.e you guys

Can you get better value? Subjective, but the reason for offering these "testers" at this price is so that we can get the brand re-established in the US. If you want me to go back on my word and offer them at $1500 instead, I'm all up for that if you are? As they say, a higher price always offers a better "Perceived Quality". Note the word "Perceived" Click here to enlarge

Their previous distributor decided to "switch & copy" (how well that works out for them, I can't say for sure), and as a very close personal friend, I was asked to help them, which I am trying to do.

Hope that clarifies things a bit. Anymore questions, please feel free to ask.

    @Msport335 - Price is USD
Very intriguing! The dampers are definitely the most important part and reading between the lines I assume they supply Bilstein dampers. haha
I have heard of a few people liking STD coils on subaru's (MAP sells them) but I didn't know much about them. For the price as long as the spring rates get clarified it seems like these would be worth trying out. With the sponsor price these would be even cheaper than BC coils which are the go to cheapo ones and it seems that these are better quality than BC's.

I'm sorry if I came across as rude, I do know "your" products and they are all of high quality and I can tell time and hard work was put into your product. I am not making a misconception based on price here and I am excited for quality low priced products to come out but when a kit comes up with springs that are way off the mark for what they should be this alerts me to the fact that not much time was put into the product. I understand that the springs are up to the purchaser and can be changed but I would think the suggested ones would be something realistic, also makes me question the thing that we can't quantify at all, the dampners. I'm sorry as this is nothing against Mfactory and I do understand that it is an intro where things still need to be worked out. Best of luck!

No harm done. New, relatively unheard of product, I get it Click here to enlarge I got the same stuff when I first started offering our LSD's

My mistake for posting those spring rates in the 1st post, so you can just ignore those. As mentioned, there are several front & rear rates available, and I will post up the full range after I've finished compiling the list.

spring rates should be matched to the damper/valving, which should all together make a set that works for the car and it's geometry/weight..

Calling it a high quality product when something this basic is still up in the air, is a bit worrying.

Well the dampers are adjustable so you would have to dial those in yourself anyway. It would be nice if the dampers were put on a shock dyno and had matching profiles for full soft vs hard on all 4 corners to make them easier to fine tune.
It sounds like this manufacturer doesn't really have a finished product for BMW's yet but that is what they are doing with this group buy/sponsorship program. To test and finalize a good product.
It is very possible that the manufacturer brand labels these dampers for Bilstein or whoever and they could be very high quality. You are right though, the whole package with good spring rates for our platform is very important not just the damper quality.
I am not usually one to be a guinea pig but the price is good if they end up being better than BC's.

I run 12k rear 9" spring 6k front 7" spring with camber plate could use a 6" spring depending on how low you want the car. This gives maximum clearance to get the widest front tire as it sits under the spring adjuster, one problem I have with the KW is that there is not enough rear height adjust-ability if you could incorporate around 2" of adjust-ability on the rear that would be good.

Calling it a high quality product when something this basic is still up in the air, is a bit worrying.
Yes, you are correct, which is why I'm asking for peoples suggestions on spring rates. This is not one generic-damper-for-all; they are specifically matched to the spring rates, and when the order for the kits are placed, the customer will receive a custom valved damper matched to their chosen spring rates.

Once the spring rates and valving are finalised, I will have them dyno tested and graphs posted up. That is not a problem to do. Again, these are not your generic Taiwan coilover kits.

I would be interested in a set at that price. I have basic Eibach Coilovers on the car, that are only ride height adjustable, and I need more adjustment for the track etc.

Rear springs are progressive, not linear, which is why the standard supplied rates were 10K/9K as the rear rate is the softest value.

I'm still trying to compile a list of the available spring rates though, and will post them up as soon as I can.
