    • Mercedes tuning value - AMR Performance gets another 180 lb-ft of torque at the wheels out of a W212 E550 M278

      The M278 gets little love from tuners and enthusiasts despite being an awesome tuning value for a German twin turbo V8. Just look at the tune only gains on this 2014 Mercedes-Benz E550i that AMR Performance was able to extract.


      The baseline is a solid 365/454:


      After tuning AMR almost gets another 200 lb-ft of torque at the wheels out of it. Ok, 180 lb-ft at the wheels to be exact but that is a massive gain.

      These cars can be picked up in the $20k range. There are also many other M278 powered Mercedes vehicles other than the E550 worth looking into.

        630ftlbs of torque at the wheels with 4matic AWD will pull some very AMG-like 0-60 times

        That massive drop in power at midrange and top end of rpm kills this engine....I wonder how much opening those down pipes really helps. We need some decent downpipes like weistec without the ridiculous price tag.
        Low profile motor mounts are necessary. Do you know if transmission mounts are necessary as well?

        what do you guys think the drivetrain loss % is with 4matic? Trying to find out what crank hp is with these wheel numbers

        I'm eventually going to get my hands on a set of m127 manifolds and turbo's. that should help rectify some issues. my immediate issue is finding downpipes that are real and aren't $5k?!?!?? wtf

        seriously, who cares what crank numbers are? coming from muscle cars, this fascination with crank numbers is sophomoric at best.

        I have no idea on the mounts but this motor is very similar to the M157 as far as being all about power down low.

        Drivetrain loss isn't an exact science but you can generally go to 20% on AWD.

        because that baseline translates to 545ft lb of torque to the crank on a car that is rated from the factory at 443ft lb. I have an E550 pre facelift on stage 1 OE tuning claims about 590ft lb to the wheels and am about to go stage II with downpipes and want to know what to expect power wise. My only regret was not being able to get a damn baseline first. Also here in so cal our tracks are $#@! our DA is always high and when we get open track it's usually hot AF.

        you're thinking almost like a real gearhead would think. almost there! lol.
        what i mean is, you should be comparing power levels based on performance, not just for bragging rights.
        i'm with you with socal tracks being $#@!, used to go to irwindale all the time and the DA is always terrible.
        i have a post facelift e550 and i'll tell you what i'm going to do. i'm going to go to pacific raceways here near seattle before my pressertech tune and then afterwards, compare the DA, temperature, and real world results and i'll give you what i calculate the power increase to be.
        i fully expect the car to have a terrible 60' time because of the lack of ability to launch, a decent et at the 1/8th and the car will fall flat on it's face and struggle to reach e.t. for the 1/4. i'll be surprised if i get under 13 seconds without the tune. with the tune, i think i'll hit low 12's.

        real question though, where did you get downpipes? did you go with weistec?

        WAIT a sec.... blowns4, did you think the 624.72 ft/lb torque was at the crank? i think you're misreading that dyno. that's 624.72 ft/lb at the wheels, if I'm not mistaken.

        i had to re-read what you wrote since i replied without understanding what you meant. this actually makes me rethink the pressertech tune i was going to get.....

        Downpipes are from Speed Driven but they are now out of business. On tune only at Fontana I ran 12.9@ 109 consistently. That was with DA at 2550 and this was before doing the upd intake mod for better breathing. When I do the correction factor on drag times this is what I got Attachment 57161 I'm guessing it was a 12.7 corrected but like I said so cal tracks are WAY SLOW. Also not sure if I'm launching it right because i was hitting 2.0 60'ft all day. Next time i get a chance to go and if it's cooler I will just try to floor the car in sport and see if the times are better( I was told that by a few 550 owners ) Also I will probably do a tranny reset for faster shifting. There is an face lift E550 in canada that did a 10.7 recently and he is pretty much the blue print of what I want to do, if I keep this car. That's basically adding 63 turbos, and limited slip.
