    • The top 25 Lightning Lap VIR laptimes of all time

Car and Driver hosts a pretty good roadcourse competition every year at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) on the 4.1 mile long Grand West layout. They compiled a list of the top 25 times they achieved but keep in mind VIR was repaved at one point so it is not apples to apples for all the cars involved.

      Still, here is the list:

      1. 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder, 2:43.1 – Lightning Lap 8
      2. 2016 Lexus RC F GT concept, 2:43.2 – Lightning Lap 10
      3. 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R, 2:43.4 – Lightning Lap 11
      4. 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, 2:44.2 – Lightning Lap 10
      5. 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, 2:44.6 – Lightning Lap 9
      6. 2016 Ferrari 488 GTB, 2:45.1 – Lightning Lap 10
      7. 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, 2:45.7 – Lightning Lap 11
      8. 2015 McLaren 650S Spider, 2:45.8 – Lightning Lap 9
      9. 2008 Mosler MT900S, 2:45.9 – Lightning Lap 3
      10. 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo S, 2:46.8 – Lightning Lap 11
      11. 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, 2:47.0 – Lightning Lap 10
      12. 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport, 2:47.1 – Lightning Lap 10
      13. 2016 McLaren 570S, 2:47.4 – Lightning Lap 10
      14. 2015 Lamborghini Huracαn LP610-4, 2:47.5 – Lightning Lap 9
      15. 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, 2:48.6 – Lightning Lap 3
      16. 2015 Nissan GT-R NISMO, 2:49.4 – Lightning Lap 8
      17. 2012 Mosler Photon, 2:49.8 – Lightning Lap 5
      18. 2014 SRT Viper TA, 2:49.9 – Lightning Lap 8
      19. 2012 Ferrari 458 Italia, 2:49.9 – Lightning Lap 7
      20. 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, 2:50.1 – Lightning Lap 11
      21. 2017 Acura NSX, 2:50.2 – Lightning Lap 10
      22. 2015 Porsche 911 GT3, 2:50.4 – Lightning Lap 9
      23. 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, 2:50.7 – Lightning Lap 6
      24. 2014 Ferrari F12berlinetta, 2:50.8 – Lightning Lap 8
      25. 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, 2:50.9 – Lightning Lap 8

Now, the Moslers on the list do not really count as production cars. Furthermore, the RC-F Concept GT is cool to see but it is basically a stripped out race car.

The real champion is the AMG GT R. Why? It is on the heels of the Porsche 918 Spyder for a fraction of the cost. Not to mention it achieves what it does without electric assistance or a mid-engine layout. It is the most impressive car in the opinion of BoostAddict.com.

Chevrolet clearly wins the bang for the buck argument, no dispute there.

Definitely nice to see a top-25 list compiled by C&D.

Jeremy C indicated there will be another model or a revised model of the AMG GT* which will be even faster....as the sedan already has faster number (torque/power wise).

Guessing that will be the Black Series variant if they bring the label back.

AMG Black is the balls out version of any MB production based car.

If they keep the dual clutch and make it light it will be a CLS killer.

First of all, nobody runs the Grand West configuration. It would be better if they ran the Full course so you could make comparisons to real life. Secondly, the new pavement put down last winter is ~4sec faster than the old repave from Dec 2013, which itself was massively faster than the old pavement from before (and wider). You basically have to throw out all comparisons to pre-2014 runs. At least. The order above basically means nothing.

Corvette zo6 is winner, only 1.2 seconds off the amg but it costs $100k less....plus I’m sure you can get that 1.2 seconds back with a few standard and warranty accepting boltons

What a bit disappointed is the new 720S lapped same time with 650S in latest Grand Tour (small track). Even though saying disappointed but seeing how the 720S has beaten everything else in straight line, I still take it lol

As long as all runs were Grand West, it's fine since it's still apples to apples within the LL times.

That's interesting about the new pavement and re-pave. Makes sense, unfortunately is the kind of critical detail that gets lost/forgotten when everyone starts comparing lap times.

Same thing with the Nurburgring unfortunately.

I would love to see where the 911 Turbo S would be with the same tires as the Z06 / AMG GTR. I'm confident that you could shave maybe 2 seconds from it's time on there.

i dont understand why every manufacture who builds these kind of cars don't offer some kind of track pack that offers r compound tires and maybe ever ceramic brakes. have it set up just for these magazine test that matter. The Nismo GTR comes to mind, why the hell doesnt it have a r compound tire!!

good point. Are there other implications to releasing a track pack to a consumer? the manufacturer would have to test the configuration for the extra stresses for one. Not sure what else. Maybe there is a financial reason they don't? I would imagine their marketing departments would want to do something to increase their rank in these (bogus) magazine tests? I am not quite sure the engineers care, since they know the potential of their design.

Exactly, this is another car. Who knows what this could do with some Trofeo Rs and some nice Carbon Ceramic Brakes
