• The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT C makes for a beautiful and rapid drop top - AMG GT C 1/4 mile and curb weight

The AMG GT C is beautiful, isn't it? Those wide hips borrowed from the AMG GT R look great and it sets the GT C apart a bit from the standard coupe. The GT C also gets an M178 V8 output bump to 550 horsepower and 502 lb-ft of torque.

Which it needs to move its porky 3804 pound behind. The AMG GT is no lightweight to begin with but 3800+ pounds is a bit much. This may be aimed at the Porsche 911 but Carrera cabriolet undercuts the AMG GT C by 300 pounds. Then again, it undercuts the Mercedes-AMG SL63 by 300 pounds.

Maybe it isn't the lightest drop top in its class but it performs very, very well. 0-60 takes 3.3 seconds and the 1/4 mile requires only 11.4 seconds at 126 miles per hour. No 911 convertible model short of the Turbo S is topping this acceleration.

It also handles very well with a 1.04g skidpad. Plenty of grip abounds and the steering feel is just like the standard car.

What's not to like? The $180k as tested price. The GT C is not the bargain the AMG GT is.

Worth it for these stunning good looks though.
