    • Flying brick - The 5783 pound 2019 M177 powered G63 hits 60 in 3.9 seconds, 1/4 mile in 12.5@110.5

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has the aerodynamics of a brick and the weight of a Panzer tank. So what? Mercedes just keeps making it better and better. With the new 9-speed transmission and M177 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 the G63 AMG is more capable than ever.

It's faster than ever too. Look at this article from 2013 comparing the M157 5.5 liter twin turbo V8 powered G63 to the supercharged 113k 5.5 liter V8 powered G55 it replaced. Well, the 2019 G63 with its M177 4.0 liter V8 takes things even further.

Mid 12's in the 1/4 mile for this nearly 5800 pound tank is insane:

      C/D TEST RESULTS: 2019 MERCEDES-AMG G63 (CHANGE FROM 2016 G63)
      Zero to 60 mph: 3.9 sec (-0.9)
      Zero to 100 mph: 10.0 sec (-1.5)
      Zero to 120 mph: 15.6 sec (-2.3)
      Rolling start, 5–60 mph: 5.1 sec (-0.5)
      Top gear, 30–50 mph: 2.8 sec (-0.2)
      Top gear, 50–70 mph: 3.3 sec (-0.4)
      Standing ¼-mile: 12.5 sec @ 110 mph (-0.8 sec, +3 mph)
      Braking, 70–0 mph: 161 ft (-2)
      Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad: 0.75 g (+0.12)

They almost improved the 0-60 sprint by a full second. MotorTrend only managed a 13.4 @ 105.2 in the 1/4 mile out of the previous G63. The new version is almost a full second quicker despite being down 1.5 liters of displacement.

It certainly helps that the M177 drops the curb weight by roughly 100 pounds but it seems the new 9-speed is really doing the heavy lifting.

It brakes better, it handles better (not that .75 g is anything to brag about), and somehow Mercedes keeps improving the G Wagon.

How can you not love it?

I love this truck so much. It's so absurd in every dimension. The price is crazy too... $170k here. Goddamn I want one so badly.

I want one too but that price... yikes.

The 9-speed is such a huge improvement too. Suddenly the M157 powered G63 doesn't look so good.

        What's your favourite spec?

I'm in love with the green right now:
