You will notice with modern turbocharged German motors and especially the V8's that manufacturers place the catalytic converters very close to the turbochargers. Why? This is done for emissions and to reduce pollution of cold starts.

How? Because the cats being close means they heat quickly and this reduces emissions and gets them doing what they were designed to do.

Unfortunately, being placed so far upstream this is also a restriction in the exhaust. Ditching the first set of cats with catless downpipes provides a major efficiency benefit.

Does this increase emissions? Yes, but there is also a second set of cats. If you want improved spool, sound, and performance it is a minor tradeoff.
