Sharks like to check people in the water out. The guy obviously didn't panic. The shark shark got curious, cautiously approached, and whipped the guy with it's tail as it took off.

There's a diver I know from the pier who said they do that all the time and he's not worried about them. He said one one grabbed his arm by the mouth and hung on but didn't actually bite him.

I think I'll stick to land rather than dealing with curious sharks.

Nice, I'm hoping to head up to the mountains this winter and just relax for a week in a nice cabin with a case of wine and no disruptions.

Sharks are common, shark attacks aren't. I wouldn't worry about it unless it were a bull or tiger shark.

out of over 350 species of sharks ,there's only 4 that are dangerous to humans. The great white, white tip, bull shark and tiger shark.

That video is in San Onofre, huge surf spot, Upper and Lower Trestles. I have heard of great white sharks being spotted in SoCal, I guess I just never really wanted to believe it. I have spent my who life going to SoCal beaches (bodyboarding/surfing), never once worried about sharks. I have seen smaller sharks, but never anything that big.

Here's a tiger shark. Their stripes fade as they mature.

That is usually the thinking but recently shark attacks have stepped up big time from species not normally thought of as dangerous to humans.

They're definitely out there. They love to om nom nom on sea lions. I wouldn't worry about it too much, though. You're probably more likely to be in a plane crash than a victim of a shark attack. To a shark, a paddling surfer can look awfully similar to a thrashing, injured sea lion. Sharks are basically glorified vacuum cleaners, they "clean" the ocean by being relentless eating machines.

^ That's why I shark fish at the pier, I let my bait go all the way out to the dog beach when the wind is going in that direction.

I've surfed that spot (San O) for over 20 years - alive and still posting - what was ironic is a few years ago in Solona beach a retired veterinarian was training / swimming in a group and killed by white.

I'm sorry to hear but even though it is rare why tempt these killing machines?

Only oceanic whitetips attack people, white tip reef sharks will not hurt a human.

Right, I should've been a bit more specific. The white tip reef shark grows no more than 5 ft long.
"the oceanic whitetip is responsible for more fatal attacks on humans than all other species combined"

David, have you ever had any encounters with sharks?

We went on a divesafari last september specifficaly to look for sharks.
We went to Egypt Red Sea Eplhinstone island, The Two Brother islands and Daedalus, whom are all famous for sharks. Shark encounters were guaranteed. Right.
But the watertemperature was 30C, and other than a sh*tload of beautifull Napoleons (like the ones above), some tuna's, a whiptail stingray and some turtles, no sharks. We encountered some 6ft nursesharks in Cozumel, do they count?
Coming summer we'll be going to Yap, Micronesie. There should be lots of sharks there.

Do mureals count? I've seen a whole lot of those, up to 8 ft long giant mureals, more than a foot thick

No, I mean why get close to these things if you could avoid it. As in, stay close to the shore... better yet, on the sand.
