MHP M156 & M159 Billet Cam Initial Video

Huge thanks to Keith/DadsC63 for getting them thrown in so quickly. Still waiting on the new trans to be synched to the car so no driving today however it was started:

As far as lope, that's about as much as you'll hear from an effectively ground set of 4v cams unless we're talking a pure race application at additional rpm. The largest benefit to having 4 valves vs 2 is being able to use smaller cams which allow 4 valves to make more average HP/TQ than their 2V counterparts all else equal.

Much more coming in the next 2 weeks including dynos and track results.

    Thanks

I was wondering if you were going to put it up or not Click here to enlarge

I like the sound at idle, a lot. This makes me wonder about cam gains on the M3 S65 V8.

Are you releasing the specs on these cams vs. stock?

I was going to wait until we had some clips of it on the dyno or doing a fly-by but I can always add it later I guess Click here to enlarge

No public release of specs however those who purchase will have a general idea of the changes made. As far as I know outside Affalterbach there are 3 people who know true stock cam specs including me.

AMG severely undercammed this motor in order for it to pass emissions, M didn't have to and I think we've both seen the pull to 9k after tuned TCM by the gentleman in Africa (whatever happened to that car?), didn't look like it let up much if any up top. Basically I don't think the gains would be even close but there has to be something on the table if they are emissions legal.

Well I hope we get the stock cam specs at some point, the SLS cams are different right?

BMW didn't leave much room on the table, you are right. Probably something in there just nothing like what is possible here in NA form.

They are pathetically small. Less than 210 degrees duration @ .050 with lift in the .4XX range. I'm sure at some point we'll post full stock specs.

Yes SLS cams are different/larger however still not as aggressive as ours.

    Thanks guys.

Keith's mechanic Jerry took the car out today after synching the trans and after some initial adaptation stated to Keith "this thing runs like a $#@!ing raped ape".

This is funny for a few reasons, if you know Jerry you know he's not easily impressed by anything and he's not particularly into performance. To date he's never given another comment about performance gains pertaining to Keith's car, and he's done all the wrenching since mod 1 (well our LTs anyway) and the best part is he never went over 3/4 throttle.

We do have some software issues to work out (misfire codes) which we planned on being a potential issue initially, however we're off to a great start as far as getting the software dialed in. We have pretty much maxed the stock fuel system as delivered N/A.

More info, data, dynos, track tests coming in the next few weeks.

    Thanks!

How does the Merc 7 speed auto hold up? What are the torque limits?

a buddy of mine had issues with his, forgot what broke but his car was out of commission for a while. I know he had ecu and full exhaust with headers.

edit: wondering how other cars are doing? any tranny problems?

As far as failures go, I have seen 722.9s fail behind 3.5L V6s (stock at that), they are just like any other mass produced item in that they can fail due to faulty components. With that being said I believe Josh smoked his clutch packs at 10k miles and Keith destroyed his with nitrous at 26k miles. For what Keith does to his vehicles (he drives them hard but also maintains them) I'm amazed his lasted that long, no doubt if we hadn't of sprayed it, it would probably still be around (it shifted N/A but not on spray)--it had 150-200 1/4 miles passes, 5-6 standing mile runs, a few open track days at Roebling and Sebring, etc. Overall however the 7G is a piece of $#@! and to date the best replacement is still another stocker, however you can get a new stock trans with converter for $4500 so it's not horribly expensive. I would take a BMW SMG or DCT over it 8 days a week. It is the limiting factor in the drivelines of all M156 variants.

Even if these things showed no gains, the sound/intimidation factor alone would make up for it! And to think I was "slightly" complaining about the noise from the LTs a year ago. This sounds wayyyy crazier and I love it!
So you said Keith is running the race spec cams? Is this what most people who have expressed interest in these plan to run? From that short clip, Keith's car still sounds like it could be driven on a daily basis.

Hey Jeff, glad to see you over here!

We can spec from mild to wild including a custom valvetrain with solid buckets and "different" valves, but the race set seen here is the most aggressive we can go given the limiting factor which is trans rpm. Without a further raised shift point we would just lose area under the curve going larger; 4Vs are very easy to over cam.

Yes this set is entirely streetable, in the limited amount of street driving Keith's had with the cams in place there's no question about it, and the final gains are going to be rather remarkable (we think) as well.

A ML63 with stock exhaust manifolds the won't have the same cam specs no question, but as far as max streetable performance this will be the grind for C63 owners with our headers. Everything from the velocity and flow of both stock and our ported heads to the length of our primaries was taken into consideration in our race sets.

    Thanks!

I'm glad I made it over here too! Nice to see a new Benz forum that's for sure.

Regarding the tuning for the cams, would the file you are fine tuning for Keith's setup be used for all cammed 63's, or will each one need to be tweaked some? I'm assuming different grinds will require different tunes?

The file we end up with for Keith's car will be the base file for his grind of cam that's correct. Other grinds will require tweaking (we will work with the owner in the same manner as Keith) to fine tune other grinds, but the key is the first base file. Once we get it nailed we're 98% there with other grinds.

    Thanks!
