    School me on digital cameras

So I need help with photography. With the LA Auto show coming up I want to get a new digital camera, something semi-professional that does high quality photos.

    What do you guys recommend?

Ok, so after doing some quick research it seems that the Canon EOS Rebel T2i is just about the best under $1k, is that right?

Seems to do great video, great stills, great everything.

I don't own one currently but I used to and I used to work at BBY and the Canon Rebels are pretty freaking sweet cameras. One thing I realized and was taught by our camera experts was that when you get into the DSLR realm, a lot of it has to do with personal preference. Some people prefer the Nikon interface, and some prefer Canons, but I was told that no matter which one you go with, you can't go wrong with either. I personally like the Nikons D-series, but I haven't followed cameras in a while. I remember hearing of a S3000 by Nikon (I think) that is a great beginner camera that was pretty cheap but still had all the great options of a professional grade DSLR but had a simpler interface and slightly fewer options. I dunno what your level of experience is, but I love the D60 by Nikon and although I've never owned a Canon, I have friends that are professional photographers and swear by the Canons...I'd say go into BBY and just mess around with them...plus it's always fun to take pics of random ass people doing stupid $#@! in best buy lol

Sure, taken by pros but if the camera is capable of it it is capable of it.

Im not familiar with canon's as i prefer nikon.

If i was to recomend something that is close to 1k dollars and is a great camera i would have to point you to a D90 matched with a nice 50mm 1.8 lense.

That is a great camera and with a 50 1.8 you can take nice pictures with shallow DOF (makes it look proffessional).

    D90 also does video.

as you get better and want more you can get better lenses and progress.

+1, the D90 is what I have. It's great, all of my shots I post on here are with that camera.

First off whatever DSLR you get, get the body only and buy lenses separately. The lenses that come in the kits blow.

Canon T2i is a good entry level camera. It is basically a baby 7D.

I personally think Nikon makes better cameras, but that is just me. Go for the Nikon D90, it has proven to be one hell of camera and users swear by it. Plus it doesn't break the bank. Also don't go by megapixel count, it means nothing when it comes to image quality. Go check out the cameras in the store, personally the Nikon's look and feel better quality. Especially the Canon Rebel bodies, they feel like toys to me.

That's what I need, entry level.

Is this thing really going to be much better than just those regular, compact digital cameras? Are my pictures really going to be that different?

Yes, any DSLR will have way better image quality. I would get a NIKON. Search around for NIKON D90 body only. There are some good prices out there. Then pick up a lens or two.

If you just want an entrylevel DSLR with a kit lens, check out the D3100. The kit with the 18-55mm lens goes for about $650. This setup would achieve photos leaps and bounds better than your sema pics.

When you get your camera download Adobe Lightroom. Helps organize and touch up photos.

The best camera review site is dpreview.com.

I want something that will allow to me to zoom in, so let's say I'm recording at the drag strip I can zoom in on the lcd readout that shows the 1/4 mile time.

I want high quality stuff, great image quality, good for stills and videos, etc.
