G-Wagon to get first complete redesign since 1979 in 2016, compact X247 GLB-class on the way

BenzBoost loves the Geländewagen or G-Wagon as it is commonly known. It is one of those icons in the automotive world that refuses to go away and continues its link to the past. Some will say the 911 does the same but the G-Wagon is much closer to its original 1979 design than today's 911 is to its original design. It will be getting its first new ground up design including a chassis that is four inches wider in 2016.

The G-Class will also get a modern aluminum frame and drop roughly 800 pounds. Considering the G63 AMG currently weighs 5876 pounds that weight loss will be much appreciated. The locking differentials will remain so do not expect much if any of a compromise in off-road ability and start thinking the G is going soft.

The G-Wagon looks will be scaled down for a compact GLB-class. It will be smaller and cheaper and not as capable off the road. The X247 GLB will come as a 2019 model so it is not coming anytime soon. It also may be available as a front wheel drive as it will be using a variant of the GLA/CLA platform for its underpinnings. Scaled down G-Class looks but without any of the G-Class capability.

Expect more information to come as we see test mules over the next few years but the G-Class is finally getting a modern update. Depending on your perspective that is either a good thing or a bad thing.

I'm glad about this...it needed to happen. The damn thing is just too heavy, too flexible, and too small inside to be of any use comparing against anything else. Less weight is good for off-roading too...and if they keep all the other stuff, it should be even better. People like to whine and complain about the looks...I trust MB lately on that front too. It's time.

It is time, definitely. The old one will be missed.

GLB is a bad name, I think. The first thing that comes to mind when seeing that is GLBT...
