Test numbers for the M157 'S' version from Motortrend - 2014 C218 CLS63 tested, 1/4 mile and curb weight

Mercedes gave the C218 CLS63 AMG and the W212 E63 a facelift for the 2014 model year. The exterior received changes but Mercedes-Benz and AMG did not stop at cosmetics. The twin turbo 5.5 liter M157 V8 engine remained but received a bump in power (through software). Additionally, an optional AMG 'S' package was made available that upped horsepower to 577 and torque to 590 pound-feet. The most significant difference between the facelift and the previous model is the addition of 4Matic all wheel drive.

More power? All wheel drive? Updated styling? Sounds great right? The only downside is there is a weight penalty with the all wheel drive. The curb weight of the CLS AMG S rises to 4402 pounds. Not a huge difference but roughly 130 pounds more than the previous rear wheel drive model. Additionally, sending power to all four wheels does result in higher drivetrain losses so until we see some dynos of the all wheel drive cars the possibility exists that despite a bump in crank output less power is going to wheels. Mercedes likely is sandbagging a bit so that scenario is unlikely despite being a possibility.

The all wheel drive clearly helps off the line with 60 miles per hour coming in 3.4 seconds. That's pretty damn quick especially for a heavy sedan. The 1/4 mile comes in 11.7 seconds at 122.7 miles per hour. The elapsed time is quicker than the rear wheel drive version and the trap speed is also about ~2-3 miles per hour higher. It definitely would be interesting to see the CLS63 AMG S 4Matic race a standard CLS63 AMG that is rear wheel drive from a roll though.

The main thing is that it is awesome for Mercedes AMG to do this and still offer a rear wheel drive option. Well, they offer the rear wheel drive option outside the United States meaning if you want rear wheel drive you need to get the pre-2014 models. You can save some coin and save weight in the car. It's a hell of a car either way.

crazy power! the weight and understeer handling on the back roads is to be expected, but a bit disappointing.

This car is a beast. Even without a proper DCT. I have to assume the 2014+ with a AMS or Renntech "massage" makes it one of the baddest daily drivers on the planet right now.

So about the same as an M5...not surprised. These numbers seem to line up with all the others I have seen.

It's pretty boring. AMG or M can tweak the software to put whichever car on top in acceleration. As it stands the M is the better car from a roll and the AMG from a stop.

Yeah pretty much. And the M5 really will take off on a roll. To me, that's much more fun and useful. Especially since apparently a bone stock M5 can be coaxed down to the 3.6x range in 0-60...how much faster can you need. I don't drive at full throttle from 0-60...generally the car is already moving.

And the old Command system is appalling. Cannot stand it next to current iDrive. Otherwise the CLS is a nice car.
