2015 W205 C63 AMG M177 4.0 liter V8 to be mated to a 7-speed MCT Speedshift automatic gearbox, no dual clutch transmission

This is a bit of disappointing news providing that the report from Autocar is correct. BenzBoost announced some time ago that the next generation W205 C63 AMG would get a 4.0 liter twin turbo direct injected V8 internally named the M177. The question that remained was whether the C63 would get a dual clutch transmission or go with the 7G-MCT transmission the current 63 AMG models use. This transmission is based on a traditional automatic although with the torque converter replaced by wet multi-plate clutches.

The transmission does not have one set of clutches for even gears and one set for odd gears so that the gear is already pre-selected for practically instant shifts. The advantage it does have though is in torque handling capability and as with the M157 engines that generate a good amount of torque the upcoming M177 twin turbo V8's output has Mercedes sticking with their tried and true 7G Speedshift trans.

What is likely to happen is a similar scenario that the M156/M159 experienced in that the 63 AMG cars get the MCT trans whereas the higher end SLS AMG received a dual clutch gearbox. The M178 V8 that is based on the M177 but going into the AMG GT sports car that will battle the Porsche 911 will likely get a dual clutch box and have power sent to the rear wheels.

The C63 may then have all wheel drive just like the CLA45 AMG little brother and the E63 AMG big brother. The CLA though does route its power through a dual clutch transmission but this is due to having a motor half the size of what will be under the C63 AMG's hood. The lack of a dual clutch is disappointing but due to the displacement advantage on its rivals this will not be a major performance disadvantage.

I know a lot of people are going to piss and moan about this but the MCT is a great trans and IMO the better option for a four door sedan. Especially considering that when people mod the new 4.0L TT it'll handle the added torque - I think AMG knows that will happen and overbuilds keeping that in mind.
Personally after driving then AWD E63, I'm more interested in if they will make the new C63 AWD as well. If they do, it'll be a game changer.

With the CLA and E both offering 4Matic and the W205 already being announced as coming with all wheel drive I think it's definitely getting all wheel drive.

Yeah this is a bit of a disappointment but I have a feeling the MCT will be plenty quick. So long as they can keep the delay with the paddles to about zero it should be good. From past experience, this has always been the AMG downfall...it's like they actually don't think anyone will notice the gap between the time you pull the paddle and the gear change actually happens. Very annoying. Hopefully that will be all but eliminated on this car.

Exactly ... I have a modified C63 coupe with MCT so i have a lot of experience with the trans. Honestly in throttle feel and shifting speed its not really giving up anything to a DCT I've had plenty of seat time in my bro in laws GTR and even he agrees my upshifts are just as quick we are splitting hundreds of a second here. But my big gripe is as mentioned when using the paddles the delay between when you pull it to when the shift happens is frustrating. It really is only a problem in the first 2 gears when using the paddles since it revs out so fast but after that its ok. Ive noticed much better response from using the shift knob but then id also like to have both hands on the wheel when ripping a high horsepower RWD car with traction control off. Im sure they will figure out something with the delay it has to be software

Even the BMW DCT has a delay that would drive me nuts. The actual shift time is insanely fast but the paddle response is meh.

IF this is true, that is PATHETIC and someone at AMG absolutely F@CKED UP.
No DCT means that I am probably NOT buying a AMG.

The C63 better be LIGHTWEIGHT if I am even going to consider buying one with an outdated transmission.
I am SO pissed off right now/

I agree that AWD is the most important asset that the C63 needs.
    Even above a DCT.

I could have accepted downsizing displacement from 6.2L. I could have accepted a MCT.
    But, I don't think I can accept a 4.0L engine AND a MCT.

Frankly, I thought the smaller displacement was necessary for the DCT to be reliable.

Well you have made several large mistakes as of late. I'm simply providing supplemental information. If that's trolling than I guess I'm guilty.

    Negative.
The only mistake I made was responding to trolling.

lol. As if AMG will lose shares over the likes of you. AMG will sell alot of these and they will be good without you, GURANTEED!

I personally love the MCT. AMG inititally introduced it on my car , the 2009 SL63. It handles high torque very well and the shifting is lightining fast.

Go back to your CTS-V, lol

like minuscule drivetrain loss advantages offset by high maintenance, lower reliability and the greater power the MCT can hold? please.. have fun dealing with the driveability issues the S6's DSG is having.

All AMG has to do is fix the paddle input lag and overheating issues.

Not AMG's style... which is why BMW made the better driver's car for so long. Fortunately the Black Series cars are changing that but still no manuals.

Yeah, we will never see a manual anymore even from the likes of Porsche, Ferrari and Lambo I bet, but oh well, that's something a manual enthusiast will have to live with I suppose, until it fades into a shadow memory. Glad we still got good'ol American muscle, which I doubt they will be getting rid of the manual anytime soon, we wouldn't allow that here I think.

What transmission does AMG's premier performance car feature?
What transmission is the current "standard of the world" for performance cars?

This is the second time you threw that comment and I did not say anything the first time!

I'm spending MY MONEY, not yours , you cheap bastard!

You speak as if the USA is our only customer, well it isnt buddy. You need oil, we give it to you for a very good price I should mention. Dont like it, dont buy it , we have other customers from Russia, UK, Japan and the rest of Europe waiting in line for it.

Remember what King Faisal of KSA did to you in the 70's when he cut you out, where you were on bicycles? lol

Again, I'm spending MY MONEY not yours.
    Your Money? Riiight

Go back and remain on topic. I did not insult you in the past for you to be throwing these silly comments.

Its pretty clear you dont like Arabs, thats fine, but keep it out of the forums. This is a car forum for car enthusiasts.

I recently drove the new AWD E63S and the S6 back to back and I would without a doubt choose the S6. I have a little S4 right now for zipping around town and I'm close to trading it in for the S6. Not to mention I get the Audi Friends and Family VIP discount and that's 15% off sticker and the ability to return the lease at any point and they just buy it back and I walk away if I want to. That peace of mind and the APR tune for the S6 make it very hard to pass up.
