Pikes Peak record broken with 1,5 minutes

Ok, by world rally champion Sebastien Loeb, and in a 875Hp modified Peugeot 208 T16, but still
1 1/2 minutes off the best time ever.
    That is pretty crazy.

The commentary in the first video is pretty annoying though

Any records broken at Pikes peak after they paved it, to me do not hold a candle and in my opinion should not be compared to the times when the course was still unpaved. Its just not as impressive anymore

True that unpaved roads made the hero status a lot bigger than the asfalt version it is nowadays.

But. The time set last year was already on paved roads.
So Loeb bettered that time with 1.5 minutes from 9:46.164 to 8:13.878.
    That is extremely impressive.
Nobody else came close, not last year and not this year.

IIRC, last year's record was set by Rhys Millen in his standard chassis Hyundai Genesis drift car. The unlimited class competitors last year all had issues. It's no surprise that a high powered AWD car broke the record by so much. I'm sure there will still be quicker times to come, but maybe not by so great a margin.

What is the best pikes peak unpaved record? Driving on dirt and gravel vs pavement requires a completely different driving skill.

Also of note was Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima setting a time of 9:46 in his E-Runner electric car.

Millen's time this year in his purpose built car was indeed significantly quicker than his 2012 time......but still about 50 seconds adrift of Loeb's.

How is this a world record when the other cars had to race in dirt with hybrid tires? They took away all the dirt and put road in its place.

Of course you will be faster with slicks and asphalt.

Loeb's time is impressive, but I have to agree that the "real" race was always on dirt. This drive by Ari Vatanen is at least 2 minutes slower than Loeb's, but is about 100x more challenging due to the loose surface. Also note that there are NO guardrails in sight over the whole course. Many of the turns up high now have a rail where people used to risk sailing off into blue sky.

A friend of mine was able to get some free tickets to this year's running, so we went up for the day. Here I am on the right wearing the floppy hat taking photos of Loeb's run:

And here's one of the photos I got of him going up:

That is Peugeot is very well sorted out. The in car vid shows almost no need for Loeb to fight handling even in the hairpins. The only time he fights the wheel seems to be on acceleration out of the turns.

My thoughts exactly. Understatement of the year right there. He didn't have to fight the car at ALL

    This.

It's just not the same breaking records at Pike's Peak after it has been paved means nothing.
