    Mercedes 45 AMG models engine will be a 2.0 liter four cylinder with 26 pounds of boost stock and 354 horsepower call the M133

    Mercedes-Benz AMG will be launching several new AMG models based around a turbocharged and direct injected 2.0 liter four-cylinder motor. These models will include the CLA45 AMG, A45 AMG, B45 AMG, and even the GLA45 AMG cross-over. The motor is expected to have an output of 354 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque which is a considerable improvement over the current 201 horsepower 1.8 liter turbo four-cylinder in Mercedes 250 models.

    To achieve an increase of 153 horsepower Mercedes is equipping the motor with forged pistons and special bearings. Displacement is increased to 2.0 liters from 1.8. It also gets a bigger turbocharger which supplies 26 pound of boost in stock form. Redline is expected to be around 6300 rpm. The head of AMG development Tobias Moers claims the motor is as strong internally as any other AMG motor which it will need to be considering the very high specific output which eclipses any other German competitor's turbo four cylinder motors including Audi, VW, and BMW.

    With 173 horsepower per liter the engine eclipses even the output of the 997 GT2 RS, impressive. The competition will have their hands full in this segment although Audi will likely use its 2.5 liter 5-cylinder to compete. BMW is apparently even planning an M version of their N20 turbo 2.0 liter four-cylinder to compete with this engine.

    My first thoughts of high boost and high output from a little 2 liter I4 is turbo lag, peaky power, and cooling issues. It's incredibly impressive to me how much power Mercedes is getting out of that little engine though.

    One funny thing to note though is that this engine can only be mounted transversely, so it's only going to be seen on cars with front or all wheel drive.

    That's exactly right, the 45 AMG models will be all wheel drive.

    Considering the low redline and likely relatively high compression it shouldn't be too bad. This is likely not too big of a turbo but one that is being pushed hard. Motor will likely have good potential with turbo upgrades.

    All the heat shielding shows they are taking the heat into account. I'm sure Mercedes AMG will get it right.

    Since it's a transversely mounted engine, that makes it the left side of the car, hehe. I'd also assume an air to water heat exchanger could be mounted just about anywhere since it only needs two coolant lines running to it.

    You can also see the engine oil to water heat exchanger on the opposite side of the engine attached to the side of the oil filter housing. I think that's a cool little addition. Keeps the oil from getting too hot, more compact than another radiator, and gets engine oil up to temp quicker on cold mornings! But at the same time, yuck! That oil filter is going to be at the back of the engine bay and kinda car down. Hopefully Mercedes doesn't run a heater core hose over the top, because then it will have the same inconvenience as my 190E.

    The intake and exhaust look monstrous.

    I'm also trying to figure out what is going on with those pulleys... Going bottom to top;
    -What looks like air conditioning compressor with clutched pulley
    -idler pulley
    -big harmonic dampener
    -alternator
    -tensioner
    -top most pulley ???

    Also, I'm seeing a ring gear on the flywheel, not where is the starter?

    It's mine, but not turbochaged, just the stock exhaust manifold.

    On one of the 190 forums there is a Swedish guy with a turbocharged engine and he was making 3 times his stock horsepower with his setup, and set the new redline at 9k RPM, while still keeping it a daily driver. That was a drool-worthy setup.

    I think they got it right. Peak torque from 2250 - and carried up until 5000 RPM. Peak power is at 6000, so it sounds pretty tractable.

    Definitely not a fan of the AWD though - that's boring for a car targeting young enthusiasts. Click here to enlarge

    How do you think it will hold tuning? I love the car but Im afraid that with 26 psi on the stock turbo there´s little to no room from more power with software only.

    Going bigger turbos doesnt seem like a good option for me, not with a probaly costly double clutch transmission.

    Im considering this for my next car, as im about to sell the 135i, but im not sure how will I cope with this car coming from a FBO+meth N54. It probably can do a decent 1/4 mile thanks to the AWD, but from my experience, AWD cars fall on their faces after 100 km/h even to cars with less power.

    It definitely will be more of a dig car than from a roll. Should be capable of mid 12's stock and that's damn good.
