    listen up automakers: cell-lock ignition

an automotive security measure which won't allow ignition until your cell phone is placed in a secured center console. once the car is started the console is locked. turn engine off... console unlocks and 16yr old (enter your child's name here) is free to facebook at will.

How would you make it actually work? What if the other people who drive the car are sometimes passengers?

Would be a good idea for kids and stuff I guess. But what if you lose your phone? Battery dies? Etc.

If you lost your phone, you'd be screwed unless the phone lock-out system is only active if a phone is detected (bluetooth or otherwise). If your battery dies, you'd simply plug it in to your car to start charging it, just like we all do today.

But I don't think this will happen any time soon. And one could get around it by just not pairing the phone to the car.

Exactly. It's interesting in theory but not practical.
