Nice - very cool build and I like the fact that you are not rushing it and being optimistic about the timeline. I'm sure it will come out great. Thanks for the pics and I look forward to more of the build process.

First order of the day was to remove the wiring harness and then the intake manifold along with the injectors and fuel rails. Was pretty straight forward. Once removed it looks like there is nothing left of the motor.

    The inlet manifold.

We then went ahead and stripped everything of the front of the engine. There are quite a few interesting channels left.

Valve cover off showing the camshafts as well as the variable cam timing adjusters.

This is the point we got more or less stuck and where the expensive special Mercedes tools are required. We sorted most of the cam placement problems etc without needing the tools but with the cam adjusters pictured below a tool is needed to hold those fine gears together at a exact place prior to removal. We pondered for a while and devized a home remedy which we will be attempting on our next engine strip session.

Since we had some prep to do with the cam removal we spun the motor around and removed the oil sump. We where really shocked when we saw the size of the oil pump. The oil system is overkill in this car and the oil pump alone weighed close to 5kg. My engine builder mentioned that after seeing this the dry sump system on the SLS was either fitted to lower the motor or for just having something nice on the sales prospectus.

At this point we called it a day.

Today time allowed us to get into the serious matters. OB from Chip Logic came over and the stripping commenced.

The variable cam gears without chains and the double gears locked in place. We did some marking with some funky lumenous green nail polish.

Camshafts off. More marking with funky pink. At this point I am wondering how expensive the nail polish I am using is. Shhhhh my wife wont know.

Close up of the valve buckets. There was no visible wear on any of the buckets accept for one which had a irregullar dimple. I am happy I am upgrading these.

Proof that even a naturally aspirated car can do with a oil catch can. The amount of grime in the intake ports is incredible.

    Timing chain cover removed.

The cover itself. Real solid pieces.

Heads are off. Notice the burn patter on the pistons.

Spun the motor around and removed the crank craddle and walla we get to see crankshaft and rods.

16 bolts later and the end results.

I am really starting to be impressed with the guys at AMG. The bottom end looked like it had just been assembled. Bearings look new with no wear and the cylinders look brand new. The bottom end is second to none in terms of strength to any motor we have opened.

Next off we going to the engineers.

^ Talk about great internal shots right there.

So no wear on the cams?

looks great! I used to work for Mercedes, had a grand old time pulling the V6s and V8s out to do timing chain gears Click here to enlarge

I believe the fancy timing gear tool you have is supposed to fit into a hole on the cam gear, to keep the mechanism and the teeth locked as one unit, so they dont spring apart.

Its been a while since I tore one down, kinda forget how it goes lol

One valve bucket had formed a dimple, in other words the bucket was pushed in right in the middle about half a mm. The rest look ok with the cams showing normal wear. Mileage on motor is 28,000km so might be to soon.

There is carbon residue which might have been caused by the previous owner driving like a pansy or the OEM AFR is far to rich. Last 3000km I have been running a AFR of 12.6 and it looks like the pistons now have "cleaned" spots on them.
