    Question Air Filters & MAF

Can anyone please confirm if the M278 Bi-Turbo motor has a Mass Air Flow Sensor or not? I was told there is NOT one present in my 2012 CLS550... therefore, an oiled air filter (such as K&N) would not be a problem (even though K&N claims there was never a problem to begin with).

Also, has anyone removed the charcoal element inside the airbox on the the Bi-Turbo engines... if so, what is your feedback?

I can't imagine that the M278 does NOT have a MAF. What would be used in it's place for air readings pre intake ??? Who told you that ???

I honestly know nothing about this topic... just going by what a 'tuner' told me. It is also possible I misunderstood his comments... thatz why I was seeking the input/knowledge of this forum.

Thanx for your feedback, LZH! Anyone else... ?

Sorry I couldn't help you more...which "tuner" told you this ? I wouldn't suggest using an oiled air filter regardless. BMC make a nice product, check them out and see if they make one for the M278.

That is good to know, thanx... saves the worry of whether I should try to remove them.

I had checked previously, but didn't see an air filter listed by BMC.

As for the MAF, is it possible the M278 uses a MAP sensor instead? I was just trying to search for a MAF part online, but failed to find one. Instead, I found a 'Pressure Sensor' (part #4) listed HERE. Any thoughts?

Some people insist that oiled filters are bad (especially on a MAF), but K&N had some very convincing tests/reports/videos that disputed this claim. If you have a moment, check out the videos HERE... they even dunk a MAF in their oil with no harm.

Then again, what can one believe...

The blue efficiency M278 V8 Biturbo 4.7L does not have a Mass Air Flow sensor & intake charcoal filter. Performance filter offer very marginal gains compared to stock filter thou.

so what does it use in place of the MAF ? Where is the intake air density etc monitored ? At the throttle body ?

Being fairly new to these mods, I'm often reluctant to ask... don't want to sound too stupid.
This time, I was fortunate... and was educated by very knowledgeable forum members.
THANX to Sticky for a GREAT forum!

THANX to Sticky for a GREAT forum!
I have to agree! Sticky has educated me and enlightened me to the huge upgrades in HP and TQ available on my car. I'd have had no idea unless this forum existed. And thanks to the others on here with their great input.
