    Proper break in procedure?

    I was looking online to see what the proper break in procedure is for the C63 and I read two differen things:

    1) only keep it in comfort mode and don't go above 4500 RPM until 1000 miles
    2) shift through all the gears multiple times without going over 4500 RPM until 1000 miles

    Any idea? Anything I should know while breaking in the car? Things I should avoid or do frequently or oil changes, etc...? Thanks

    Thrash from the beginning. These engines are all prefitted and run from the factory and you are all good. Now, if you are putting new bearings and pistons whil tat is another story. The aftermarket stuff does not have the same prep as AMG so will have to be broken in slowly.

    Vary your RPM early on through the break in period but you want to be a little hard on it to get everything to seat nicely.

    They do run the motors before you get it though so the break in babying stuff isn't really necessary. Just change your oil afterwards.

    I attempted to adhere to your 1st procedure, but there were more than a few occasions where my right foot disobeyed the suggested break in methods.

    I have never understood why people always say thrash it. The manual says break it in soft, why would the engineers put that in there if it wasn't the case?

    To protect themselves. Just in case something is wrong you don't want people thrashing on it and breaking the car or hurting themselves. That way the issue may be identified at the first inspection.

    Also, if any material shows up in the oil.

    A hard break in tends to produce slightly more power.

    Evidenced by? I'm really curious. I know some engine builders have very regimented, very hard break-in procedures but these are setup and prepped for the break in.

    Evidenced by BMW changing the oil to look for any material in the diff as well as motor at 1200 miles.

    It isn't that you are going to hurt the motor by revving high, you want to vary the revs anyway to seat the rings.

    had a 2009 c63, went full throttle on the highway after it was up to temp after getting out of the dealership... although i scared myself from the torque, it was worth it... and the car was strong past 40k miles...

    then i got a 2010 c63, did the same, this time i wasn't as scared... until i got full headers and a tune... i'm now at about 36k and no problems

    edit: only problem so far is getting used to the power... i keep wanting more...
