The Mercedes SL is a great touring car with a folding hard top. That folding hard top however added a ton of weight to the car. A 2 seat pseudo-sports car should not way more than a mid size sedan. This is the reason why the E55 AMG was actually faster than the SL55 AMG since it was lighter. Mercedes intends to drop the weight of the car by 300 pounds which should put it around the 4100 pound mark. How are they doing this? Through extensive use of aluminum in the frame and body shell. SL is supposed to stand for sport-lightweight and although over 4000 pounds is not light dropping weight is the right move.

And the light-weight wars continues. I'm really glad that automotive manufacturers are starting to move in the direction of lighter weight. It's really cool to see the advancement in technology and new practices.Out of curiosity, are those honeycomb or wells a form of keeping things lighter while retaining rigidity? Any speculation on why they are using that form of laying down aluminum versus a standard flat finish?
