The next big thing after carbon fiber?
This is the lightest metallic material ever created. It is pretty strong as well and hopefully will eventually find its way to automotive applications:
Researchers have created a new metallic material that they claim is the world’s lightest solid material. With a density of just 0.9 mg/cm3 the material is around 100 times lighter than Styrofoam and lighter than the "multiwalled carbon nanotube (MCNT) aerogel" - also dubbed "frozen smoke" – with a density of 4 mg/cm3 that we looked at earlier this year. Despite being 99.99 percent open volume, the new material boasts impressive strength and energy absorption, making it potentially useful for a range of applications.

Sounds like Aerogel...which is also the best insulator in the world too
Edit: Seems like I missed where it said it was lighter than aerogel...which I can't really see how since they are both 99.99% air.Current: 2005 Mercedes E55 AMG

Hey my university (UCI) was part of the research for that, hopefully this will allow cars to become lighter and not heavier again

Problem with new development, low manufactured products is $$$. Maybe in yearssss, but composites are still the best medium IMO.

Fascinating discovery. I bet it isnt cheap to manufacture though. Give it 10 more years and slave labor chinese kids will be pumping this $#@! out by the ton! Some people live long, meaningful lives.
Other people eat shit and die.
I'm not racist, I hate everybody equally; especially fat people.
