Michigan Governor signs 4 year welfare limit into law

It's about time they attempt to stop the abuse of the system.

I especially like this quote: "the fiscal reality is that we cannot afford to provide lifetime cash assistance to recipients who are able to work." Gee...ya think?

I am not against helping people who really need it but the $#@!s that abuse the system need to be put in their place. Folks, there are jobs out there. They may not be the high paying, upper management jobs that these lazy $#@!s are holding out for but they are there. My wife is a store manager at a large retailer chain and hears this $#@! all the time. She will offer people more hours and they will decline using the excuse that if they take the hours and make more money they will lose their welfare benefits. Well, isn't that the $#@!ing point?

We agree completely but 4 years still seems long to me. I can't believe people were able to milk this for longer than that. What incentive is there to find work if you always retain your welfare check indefinitely?

4 years is better than forever.

You would think the same incentive that you or I have to work. I have enough aches and pains that I bet I could get on dissabilty...but guess what?

At least this is a step in the right direction but there should be some kind of federal time limit as well. Maybe there is, I don't know, never looked into welfare.

Here in NYC welfare is a 5 year gig... But there aren't enough paper-pushers to do the right thing and cut these lazy bums off after 5 years, so they end up getting it for a lot longer than 5 years... Maybe if they hired more people to do the paperwork, less money would be sent to welfare recipients.

Not only should there be a limit, but the state should drug test recipients too.
