    Poll of the Day #4

You are watching a movie in a crowded theater. Though the plot is mediocre, you find yourself dazzled by the special effects. But with twenty minutes left in the film, you are suddenly certain your mother has just died. There is no logical reason for this to be true, but you are certain of it. You are overtaken with the irrational metaphysical sense that--somewhere--your mom has just perished. But this is only an intuitive, amorphous feeling; there is no evidence for this, and your mother has not been ill.

Would you immediately exit the theater, or would you finish watching the movie? Why or why not?

Re: Poll of the Day #4

Is this a serious question? If I had an overwhelming fear of my mother's death, it would be the most important thing to me. I can watch the movie later online. I would never forgive myself if I figured out that somehow I telepathically knew my mother had died and I had sat and watched a movie.

see, im on the other end of the spectrum.

If for no good reason at all i thought my mom was dead and all i had to do was chill for 20 min until i could find out she's just at home watching The OC, then of course I'd wait till the end of the movie

Right, but how would you feel regarding your mother? You didn't have anything to do with her death. But I guarantee you'd feel guilty.

    yea

but the chances of your mom actually being dead are very low.
maybe its just that im not superstitious what-so-ever, but i couldnt justify making a scene on a whim

I'd get out and call my mom. The movie can be watched again.

Um, finish the movie. There's no scientific proof or compelling rationale to believe that mom just died. It's just an intuition with no connection.

But you stated in the OP it's not even a good movie. It just has good effects.

And regardless of what the chances are, it's your mother. Would you really want to take that chance?

the movie being good/ bad has nothing to do with it per-se. thats why you'll notice I havent mentioned the movie as being a contributing factor in my decision no to call.

and take what chance? if the feeling is correct ,she'd already be dead. Leaving would just mean I would know 20 min sooner than i would otherwise. either way, there's nothing that couldve been done.

That's true, and I have already stated that. But the point is that you would feel bad that you sat and watched a movie. You would have to be one cold hearted s.o.b. to not. It's not your fault of course. But you would feel bad that you ignored your intuition for entertainment, especially when it something concerning your mother's well being. I prefer to not go through life with regrets. And if I was in this situation and ignored my feelings, I would regret not caring enough about my mom that a movie took precedence.

I don't ever get sudden, overwhelming feelings. So if I got one, I'd definitely take a second to think it over.

What about the regret of spending $12 on a movie and not finishing it?
