Porsche 997.2 Turbo S PDK vs. a Ferrari 458 Italia mile long drag race

Here is another mile race from our friends in Russia at dragtimes.info. This race is a very interesting race to see as they are both very fast cars with dual clutch transmissions but it also covers a long of enough distance to mitigate the Porsche AWD advantage at launch. The race plays out as expected, the 997 Turbo gets the jump and takes the 1/4 mile but the Italia start to make up ground and at the mile marker has the higher trap speed but can't get there before the Porsche.

Awesome race but it was just as I expected. Porsche jumping out from the dig and holding the lead all the way through the mile. The prancing horse was slowly catching up but it's not enough since that Porsche has a ton of Torque to help pull it through, not to mention that even though the Porsche *only* makes 530hp some people claim it is closer to 550 or maybe even more when you consider the dyno #'s.

That 458 got walked... Funny how people rave about the 430's, 360's and even 355's. Never been scared to walk one down a highway. Cool looking ride with the 458 but not nearly as fast as it should be.

i think the italia is plenty fast for a well balanced sports car that isnt a dedicated dragster

Agreed. Although I've never driven one, everything I've ever read, seen and heard about them speaks to their unflappable chassis, incredible ride/handling and craftsmanship...combine that with that fact that it's faster and better-looking than 9/10ths of the cars on the road today and I'd say that's a pretty sweet combo!

Yes, plus other competitors have FI engines while 458 has a small displacement NA.

The 430 and 360 aren't all that fast. The 458 is no joke.

Nothing against you dude but I've seen this line on too many forums or car videos. People need to stop with the: "Oh Ford had to put a supercharger on the Cobra to beat Chevy" or "If this car had a turbo it would kill this car"

Force induced technology is old as hell and in no shape or form is it a corner cutter....not to me at least.

Nobody is saying it is cookie cutter (well, BMW used to say that) but it is more impressive to see a relatively small NA motor whoop on a turbo motor or even compete with it. That is some great engineering in the Italia.

Nobody said a thing when Ferrari came out with the F40....and till this day nobody says anything bad about that car. Every car magazine journalist to a car enthusiast still gets a boner with that car. Anything fast is impressive FI or NA.

Listen I'm not saying its not fast, nor well balanced... Love the sound but not the looks at all

Its a great drive but to me it's not the challenge the previous chassis were. A 430 drew the line and crossed into being daily driveable vs the 360/355 were still edgy. The 458 is very much a DD. No more sticks and very well balanced, but with the electronics anyone can drive one fast and be a hero. Now with the electronics off you can get into trouble for sure but its so very controllable on the edge it wont likely hurt you. The Porsche while more civilized than prior generations (Like my old 89 911 Turbo, say it with me. Drop throttle oversteer) will still bite if not treated respectfully even with the electronics on in some cases.

Being a Stang guy I see your point... The LS motors are plenty damn stout without a blower. Interesting the Mustang 4V Modular motors are more european in their powerband without the blower. Less tq down low and more rpm's at least compared to a 302/351W motor. The 03/04 Cobra's threw a roots blower onto a tq-less motor and gave it big friggin balls for sure. Same with the 5.4 in the GT500.

Now Chevy has the ZR-1 motor with a blower, the CTS-V and the upcoming Camaro ZL1 with near identical motors. That motor is a beast different ways to the same point. The GM guys were screwed when the Termi car arrived they want revenge LOL

The Ferrari F40 was designed in the 80's. Turbo technology has evolved a bit since then and there was at least somewhat of a link to Formula 1.

The point is really when an NA motor beats a turbo motor, it is impressive since turbo motors don't have a max volumetric efficiency like NA motors.

The 458 appeals to a wider range of drivers while at the same time having far higher limits. That is a win for Ferrari and if you want edgy just wait for the Stradale/Scuderia version.

So what will you use as a comparison for that impressive outcome? A N/A beating a FI motor of the same cylinders? Maybe price of the cars? I can already feel the war starting when the MP4-12C comes out on the market. "If Ferrari put turbos on the Italia it would smoke the POS McLaren"

It's just important to be aware when it is an NA vs. turbo comparison. I find it far more impressive to see a motor like the Italia's than the Porsche's.

It's a matter of taste... A like a car that requires driver involvement and not one that anyone with a fat wallet can be a track hero in. I would rather do my hell toe shifts, rev matching and clutchless shifting. It's a great car if I were in a position to purchase I would look at other cars first. My version of something raw is http://moslerauto.com/street.php I got to drive one of these 2 years ago, I shat myself in that thing OMG.

Most don't look at this but IMO I always look at how car do when they are bolted up and tuned. Regardless if I bought a 458 or McLaren, I would do an exhaust and tune. That's just how I do things since I always like to get more power extracted safely.

Exhaust and tune on the 458 = what like 20bhp maybe?

Exhaust and tune on the McLaren = Possibly 100bhp+?

The McLaren with an extra 100hp should be a 140mph trapping car.

Again, most don't care about this but to me it's pretty important.

Maybe Novitec will put twin blowers on it like it did the 430 to give it some bigger balls
