Before and after OE Tuning W218 Mercedes CLS550 M278 V8 twin turbo dyno tune: +48 whp, +62 wtq

This is the first before and after tune dynograph we have seen for the M278 4.7 liter twin turbo direct injected V8. The results are impressive, as expected. The car tuned is a 2012 W218 Mercedes CLS550 completely stock on 91 octane. Baseline was a respectable 342 wheel horsepower. After the custom dyno tune, 389.9 whp. Torque went from 382.8 to 444.4. Looks like the M278 is going to be a formidable platform and have some people second guessing whether a 63 AMG model with the M157 is worth the extra cash.

The motor is rated at 400 hp and that is on OE Tuning's dyno dynamics, it's right where it should be. That baseline would be higher on a dynojet...

Where is the rest of what?

It's 429 in the S and CL, in the CLS it is 402 horsepower exactly.

On their dyno I'm not sure, would need to see a 550i on there. On a dynojet this one put down 386: http://www.bimmerboost.com/showthrea...yno-of-my-550I

So, the cars are close but it seems the N63 has a slight edge even with less displacement which is... interesting.

That is what I thought as well, but actually the M278 has the higher compression ratio. It also pushes slightly more boost.

It seems the N63 is simply a more efficient powerplant due to its turbos and manifold design.

Yep, in a way, just with more torque.

48 whp gain and 62 wtq is a very nice increase for the M278.... that's almost 60 hp to the crank Click here to enlarge

If OE gained this much on the M278 engine, I can't wait to see what kind of gains they'll make on the M157 Click here to enlarge

On the standard M157 HUGE gains will be had. I mean HUGE!

The issue will be the Performance Package cars which will be closer to the turbo limit.

Is anyone currently running this tune in their CLS550... if so, may we please have some feedback?

Nope, but the results from both of these tuners should show you there is plenty of power to gain.
