Edmunds tests the M278 V8 twin turbo based W216 CL550, first acceleration numbers for the new motor 12.8@109

We finally have some test numbers for the new M278 4.7 liter direct injected twin turbo V8 that will be going into all the new Mercedes 550 models. In the very heavy CL550 at California Speedway (a notoriously slow drag strip) Edmunds Insidline was able to hit a 12.8@109 on street tires. This is in an almost 4700 pound car. What this means is with this motor in the E class the new E550 is going to be putting up acceleration numbers that won't be too far off the previous generation E63 AMG with the M156 naturally aspirated V8. The new E550 is going to be a very fast car and this bodes well for the new E63 AMG. The new CL550 basically matches the elapsed time of the previous naturally aspirated CL63 AMG and is a few MPH off its trap speed.

The 550's are going to run times not far off the previous 63's, it's insane.

You forgot that Edmunds always posts catastrophically slow times, I swear their drivers are handicapped or something.

So if Edmunds got a 12.8, that's hugely impressive.

Whoa talkign about impressive 60-0 braking in 111 feet for such a boat is amazing!

Edmunds gets realistic numbers and they tested at California Speedway which means a prepped car with drag radials at a faster strip would be capable of mid 12's at least. These things will actually give the old 63's a run for their money, it's crazy.

    This is really nuts.

Do the E550 coupes weigh less than the sedans? Are they still making the E550 coupes for MY2012?

You would think an E550 with DR's in really cold weather and good DA may be able to go low 12's -- dare I say, 11.999 on a glory run? Click here to enlarge Click here to enlarge

Yes, they do weigh less. I don't see why wouldn't be making them, should get the new motor I would think/hope.

Of course. I was just clarifying about their continued production. Thanks.

Man, 12's all day in that car.

Yep, stock, and the 4.7 won't be a slouch to tune either.
