    • 180 whp gains tune only and over 600 wheel horsepower from the C190 Mercedes-AMG GT M178 on the factory turbos? M178 Tuning Comparison

It is ok to be skeptical here. Even the tuner was shocked at the numbers when he contacted BenzBoost for some context. Precision Tuning got huge gains out of this Mercedes-AMG GT. When comparing these tuned M178 figures to other tunes it certainly is a big difference.

Now, it is important to note tunes evolve over time. Additionally, not every tuner pushes to the ragged edge. BenzBoost is not saying this car is pushed that far only that Precision Tuning is making remarkable progress.

Let's look at the Weistec tune on 91 octane:

The baseline is 480 wheel horsepower and 454 lb-ft of torque at the wheels for the AMG GT S on California 91 pump fuel. This is on a Dynojet.

Now, let's look at Renntech's AMG GT S results stock, with an ecu tune, and with their R1 package on 93 octane pump fuel:

      The baseline figures are similar.

Now, Renntech intentionally limits their tune to protect the transmission. When looking at graphs, realize a lot of testing goes into the product. Renntech is not trying to get into a power war or do any glory pulls. Their package is designed around OEM reliability and takes the dual clutch transmission into account. This is why they push their C63 M177 packages harder due to the W205 C63 having an automatic transmission and not the same dual clutch unit.

So how is Precision getting these numbers? Well, their tuner is talented for one and what he did is he applied some of the things he tried on the M177 C63 to the M178 AMG GT.

      The results are phenomenal:

How long the trans lasts is up to how the car is driven. Even the stock output will wear discs down if someone just launches at every opportunity.

Still, incredible gains over a baseline AMG GT (not an S) making it a whopping tuning value even at its six digit price point.

Let's take a look at upgraded M178 turbocharger numbers.

Here is Renntech's Stage I (mild) turbo upgrade:

      Big gains throughout.

Pure Turbos upgrade is offering similar peak figures.

It is interesting to note that while the turbo upgrades are exceeding this tune only AMG GT in power it is amazing how close the M178 is getting on the factory turbochargers. The torque output is also amazing.

It is important to note the tuner did pour in 100 octane fuel to obtain these figures for safety. The 93 octane pump gas results were basically the same though. Notice the 610/640 pull. The 611/647 is with race gas blended in:

Peak figures are not always the whole story. It is certainly possible turbos are pushed out of their efficiency ranges or that heat soak will be a problem.

It is fun to watch M178 tuning evolve and what is clear here is that the AMG GT is a wonderful performance platform.
