    • Jaw dropping - 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R manages a 7:10.92 Nurburgring laptime in the hands of Sport Auto

This isn't some bogus marketing time. This is not some result with a sandbagged car. This is an independent result at the hands of the German publication Sport Auto who regularly times cars on the 'Ring to see how they stack up.

As a reminder, Sport Auto's Nurburgring laptime for the M4 GTS did not match BMW's claimed time. Sport Auto got a 7:37 out of it. That is just over 26 seconds slower than what they achieved with the AMG GT R. In other words, an eternity.

It's a mind numbingly quick laptime. Honestly, AMG did not just only kick BMW in the balls with their performance credentials but just about everyone else. Look at these times from other Sport Auto tests:

      Nurburgring (Sport Auto)
      AMG-GT R - 7:10.92
      Porsche 918 Spyder - 7:13
      Ferrari 488 GTB - 7:21
      Porsche 997 GT2 RS - 7:24
      Porsche 991 GT3 RS - 7:28

This is just over 10 seconds quicker than the Ferrari 488 GTB. That's insane.

Mercedes-AMG is the real deal and is not playing second fiddle to anyone. The AMG GT R is quite simply an incredible achievement.

Just a couple weeks ago I was more than impressed by the Sport Auto's time for the new Ferrari 488. Now this thing is 10sec quicker...crazy.

Issue isn't available until the 9th. As with all their supertest, all that data will be provided.

They did tease, the incredible time comes from the AMG GTR being extremely composed at the driving limit.

I find it insane that it was done on sport cup 2 tires, imagine what it would do with a Trofeo R under there.

No, I'm not. You don't seem to understand we're going by Sport Auto times. The Sub-7 minute time was one Sport Auto observed but did not conduct.

The driver said that the AMG was really easy to drive on the limit, quite benign behaviour which is what makes a really fast car and also one that can easily succeed in races.

That being said, the 918 was driven by someone else (they changed the supertest driver 2 years ago to Christian Gebhardt) so it's not excluded the times would be different with the new driver. But that's just speculation. 7:11 for a full lap is mind-blowingly fast - I know the Ring really well, and going at almost 280 km/h over Schwedenkreuz is simply insane. I can take anyone of you on a (slower!) passenger lap with me if you're near the 'Ring, so you get at least a vague idea what these speeds mean on that track, driving an approximately 600hp supercar on cup tires at the limit.
