A major congratulations to ICS performance is in order. There was some controversy a couple weeks back regarding this M coupe putting down 784 whp on the dyno. Whether the runs were made on pump gas or not the fact is the car is incredibly fast recording a major BMW performance breakthrough. There were members asking for performance figures other than the dyno and now they have them, with the car breaking all BMW records at the Texas mile and being the first BMW to run over 200 mph in the mile. Congratulations to George and everyone at Imported Cars of Stamford. ...

This is some HUGE news for a number of reasons. First of all, the price point Maximum PSI is aiming for with this turbo kit is under $10k. That basically blows every other competitor away. Secondly, it is being tuned on the stock DME. We hear the talented Nick G of Technique Tuning (M54 / 330i turbo kits) is doing the tuning and aiming for a factory DME tuned setup with fully functional CEL (check engine light). ...

This is what we like to see. No nonsense babling, no British people rambling on and on about their feelings, just two cars head to head on the track with actual numbers. Yes, driver skill plays a part here but this is a great head to comparison. It's a nice back and forth battle between the two with the TT-RS taking the lead under braking at one point and..., well, we won't spoil it. We think the 1M could have done a quicker lap without some of the showoff drifting but watch and decide for yourself. These cars really are so close it comes down to driver skill. ...

We are skeptical of the i8, no doubt about it. Make that petrified of the entire BMW "i" brand and the impact it will have on BMW performance. The newest i8 commercial from BMW has us thinking the news might not be all bad. BMW puts forth some very bold claims including 0-60 in 4.8 seconds along with 62 MPG (3.8 liters per 100 km). Check out the commercial below which makes the i8 looks very appealing and for those wondering this is what they were filming when the car was spotted in Abu Dhabi back in January. ...

Ok, so this is not a street BMW but a dedicated drag car. Still, it is powered by a fire breathing 1850 horsepower 4.8 liter S85 V10. The bore has been slightly reduced to increase cylinder wall thickness. The body is designed to look like an E92 and made out of carbon fiber by Kjell Arne Solberg at Carbon Design. This drag car has run 6.93 @ 203 mph on 26 psi fueled by methanol. Your tuned BMW doesn't feel quite so fast anymore after seeing this, does it? ...

We tried to stay optimistic about Autocar's view of the 1M but it sure was hard when they claim the 1M is a return to a traditional raw M car and that one could argue this is the car BMW has been longing to build since the E30. They state the E36 was too broadly focused. Did they forget the E36 M3 actually weighs 150 pounds less than the 1M? Did they forget the E36 M3 had a naturally aspirated motor with individual throttle bodies offering up greater response? Did they forget BMW made an E36 M3 lightweight which was far more raw than the 1M ever will be? Autocar, don't talk down on the E36 or make E30 comparisons with a car that weighs 500 pounds more than the original M3 which was built with racing in mind, not profits. ...

Now, the BMW N54 twin turbo has been underrated since inception. The first 335's dyno'd in the 270 whp range which is right around what an E46 M3 puts to the tires. The difference is, the E46 M3 was rated at 333 horsepower and the E9X 335 was rated at around 300 horsepower. M3 owners have fragile egos that need to be protected after all and BMW protected the M3 image. The underrated N54 trend continues with the BMW E82 1M that Insideline dyno tested to 331 wheel horsepower. The car is only rated at 335 horsepower at the crank, meaning this is the most underrated vehicle BMW has ever produced. ...

We knew the 1M would have a short lifespan we just did not think it would be quite this short. The F20 1 series is around the corner and has been spotted testing all over the place. The 1M is going to be out of production by December of this year. BMWNA M brand manager Matt Russel told the Detroit Bureau the 1M “will be a one-year car." We expect BMW to roll out an M model for the next generation F20 1 series much faster than for the E82 since there no longer is a stigma about a "cheap" M and BMW learned that they could make fast money selling the M badge. ...

In August of last year we brought you renderings of an X3 M as well as laid out our case as to why we thought the X3 M made sense. Car magazine reports that an M version of the X3 is on the way set to launch in 2012. They also report the motor may be tri-turbocharged. Hey, crazier things have happened, like M making SUV's in the first place, right? ...

HPF has unlocked its AEM engine management system for all customers. Well, they have unlocked it for an extra $1000. That 1k buys you the ability to tune for different hardware than what HPF provides, larger/smaller turbos, as well as E85. So, they are mimicking what the Pro-EFI does except with a monetary penalty. Would this have come about if the Pro-EFI was not stealing a bit of thunder? We seriously doubt it. With the $1k it costs to get this feature from HPF, it may simply be better to go Pro-EFI to begin with. Still, this is a nice option and one that should have been available a long time ago although we understand how HPF would be apprehensive about novices blowing up their motors. ...

Our friends at GT spirit sent us a message earlier today that they had done a road test of the new F10 Alpina B5. GT spirit has put up several of our articles over the past year and now we can finally return the favor. The Alpina B5 features a modified N63 V8 twin turbo similar to the unit in the B7 with larger turbos and new tuning raising output from from 400 horsepower to 507. The suspension is lowered for a sportier look and ride with a restrained Alpina body kit adding subtle aggression to the exterior. Unlike the F01 B7, The F10 B5 is not currently scheduled to come to the US. ...

Big surprise, AutoNews reports the 5 series GT is a failure. Sometimes creating too many niches can bite you in the behind and that is exactly what happened to BMW with the 5 GT. Head of BMW North America, Jim O'Donnel, said he wishes the company had not stopped selling the 5 series wagon instead of the 5 series GT which he thought wagon owners would switch to, "The disappointment I have is that I thought a lot of our 5-series station wagon customers would go with the GT. In point of fact, that is not happening. We have lost those customers to the competition, mainly to Mercedes-Benz." ...

The overall BMW 60-130 record has been broken by a twin turbo E36 M3. Yes, this car belongs to Mert Dastan. Not the most credible source in the BMW world and someone who has accrued a questionable reputation. Therefore, we advice readers to keep these questions of credibility in mind when reviewing the provided details of this run. The car is a Euro spec E36 M3 with twin 68 mm turbos, custom intercoolers, and an 8900 rpm redline. The car was run on C16 at 27 psi. There is no video of the run and the owner admits there is nitrous on the car although claims it was not used. ...

Last week we reported it was the 75 year anniversary of the BMW 328. BMW decided to honor the milestone with a modern concept based on the original 328. Obviously the modern design take has a lot of the Vision concept in it but that is fine, it looks great. Yes, that is a carbon fiber body and yes those are leather straps on the bonnet an obvious throwback to the original. Well done BMW, well done indeed. ...

Most folks will agree the M3 looks more aggressive than its standard 3 series sibling. Many folks try to mimic the look with the hood and sideskirts but without the wider fenders they are missing the key ingredient. Prior Design now has M3 wannabe's (sorry, couldn't resist) covered with their new M3 look bodykit for the E93. We aren't big fans of the hood, but we do admit, the kit is well done. The only thing is, don't use the M3 badge on your fenders for a non-M, that just makes you a poser. ...
