    • BMW N55 turbo 6 cylinder named to Ward's 10 best engines list 2011

This is the 17th year for the Ward's 10 best engines awards. The competition annually awards the 10 best engines available in the U.S. market. The engine must be available in a vehicle for sale in the U.S.A no later than the first quarter of the year. The engine must also be available in a car costing less than $54,000 which cuts out all the good stuff and makes this competition far less prestigious or competitive as the International Engine of the Year Awards. It is great to see the N55 take over for the N54 which made the list in in 2009, 2008, and 2007.

      Here is the complete list:

      3.0L TFSI Supercharged DOHC V-6 (Audi S4)
      3.0L N55 Turbocharged DOHC I-6 (BMW 335i)
      1.6L Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Mini Cooper S)
3.6L Pentastar DOHC V-6 (Dodge Avenger)
5.0L DOHC V-8 (Ford Mustang GT)
1.4L DOHC I-4/111kW Drive Motor (Chevrolet Volt)
5.0L Tau DOHC V-8 (Hyundai Genesis)
80kW AC Synchronous Electric Motor (Nissan Leaf)
2.0L DOHC I-4 Turbodiesel (Volkswagen Jetta TDI)
      3.0L Turbocharged DOHC I-6 (Volvo S60)

I don't like this anywhere near as much as the international engine of the year competition.

Is there a link showing the reasons why each engine was chosen?

How about that the Indians own the British brands? That one is truly mind blowing.

I'm using the term very loosely. Click here to enlarge

Anyway, I had no idea that Hyundai upped the V8 to 5.0L and 429HP until this thread. They could make a 5.0 competitor. (V8 in Genesis chassis?)

A V8 in the Genesis would be... well it would make things very interesting.

Agreed, BMW is a great motor builder. IMO, they were one of the best ever and hopefully they bring that same pride to these turbo motors.

Yeah, as much as I love my V8 M3, I keep thinking about the next gen M3 and M5.......I think I'll get an M5 in a few years, before I'm 40 years old. I'll appease my wife by offering her my M3. Nah, she's happy with her N55 335xi. Click here to enlarge
