• It exists - 2016 BMW F87 M2 coupe spotted testing for the first time, spyphotos

If you had to see it to believe it, here it is. BMW will produce an M2 variant of the 2-Series and bridge the narrow gap between the F22 M235i and F82 M4. BMW for whatever reason is giving the M cars their own chassis codes these days and the M2 will be known as the F87 platform. The M2 obviously can not step on the toes of the M4 so by default it will have less than the 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque that the S55B30 puts out.

The question now becomes, will the M2 get an S55 variant that is detuned (as in a real M motor) or just the same N55 that is under the hood of the M235i with some software changes to boost output into the ~375 horse range? Considering BMW prefers to take the path of least resistance these days re-using the N55 means maximum profit with minimal expense. It also means the M2 will not have a real M motor and in the opinion of BimmerBoost not be a real M car just like the E82 1M. That would make it an M235i with a limited slip differential standard, a body kit, M3/M4 suspension bits, different software, and an M badge paired to an inflated sticker price.

This car will essentially be the new E82 1M and it will be interesting to see if BMW gives this vehicle a DCT transmission. A manual is practically a certainty.

More details to come as they become available but the 2016 M2 is on the way.

Not as impressive as some of the renders that I've seen, but will PROBABLY be my next car.

It will sell. At least the N55 tuning market will be ready for it unless the ECU is insane.

Very early mule. I am sure it will look much different. This mule could be just testing the drivetrain components.

It depends on the specs. It will sell and be gobbled up.

Whatever, I hear domestics calling my name.

I was visiting a customer yesterday and they had two C7s in their parking lot. A bright yellow one and a dark green one. Damn they are sexy. I got a Camaro convertible as a rental - what a piece of $#@!. Couldn't see out of it. Cowl shake like a mofo. Terrible interior. At least the V6 sounded nice and the stereo was pretty good.

I'm not big on the Camaro but the C7 is a hell of an improvement from GM. I never considered anything from them until now.

I don't entirely understand this car - would seem to eat into the M3/M4 market if they make it too good...but I guess we will see.

Some people, such as myself, just prefer smaller cars.
Would love this with S55 and DCT.

It's not going to be too good. It will be a better M235i.

Bimmerpost is stating they've confirmed the N55 as the engine.

It most likely is the N55. It's not an M car.

I know man but if they're calling it an M2 that $#@! needs an S designated motor IMHO

I'm excited for this car. Whether N55, S55, S20, whatever, give me ~380HP, M suspension/tires/brakes, DCT, LSD, 3,100lb curb weight and price it around $55K and I'll be all over this.

By the time this 2 Series M comes out, you'll be able to buy a low miles C7 from an old guy that never drove it for about the same money. I'd take a C7 every time over this parts bin car.

        Damnit, I don't want a N55. Rather have a S20!
