    • BMW intends to make the 6-Series a more focused sports car - 2018 6-Series planned to lose 550 pounds?

You know when things sounds too good to be true that they often are? That is likely what is going on here. The Germans over at AutoBild are claiming the next generation 2018 6-Series is targeting a weight loss of 550 pounds. Sounds great, right? That would make the next generation 6-Series roughly 3700 pounds depending on the options and engine. Does anyone need to be reminded how the F80 M3 missed its weight target?

Let's assume for a moment BMW actually does make the new 6-Series lighter and more focused on the driving experience. This would then leave more room for an 8-Series variant to slot in between the upcoming 7 and 9-Series. BMW makes the 6-Series less of a GT and more of a sports car meaning the 8-Series will be the top GT in the lineup. It actually makes sense as long as the 6-Series doesn't get too close to the 4-Series.

The next 6 is a ways off. A lot could change and AutoBild has no cited sources for their report. It just feels like they are guessing, like most publications looking for hits above all else these days.

I wish it was true but they can barely get a 2 series under 3500 lbs.

Well, the next shared 5/6/7/RR platform is targeted to lose many hundreds of pounds so this makes sense to me. The M3/4 did miss their target by a bit but even if they can only manage to find, say, 375 pounds, that would be huge. I'm excited for the next gen M5/6.

Makes sense like you said, makes room for a more premium GT 8-series. They need to drop the weight and price. The 6-series is way overpriced now, they usually have to move inventory on lots with large incentives.

+1 I rarely see 6series cars on the streets here. Much less then when the previous 6 was released. Prices for these cars have just gone through the roof.

My brother in law just got a 650i, msrp was over $100k. Just crazy. I think they had a $10k incentive. Still too much for that car. It is a nice car, but not $100k nice.

if it looks as beautiful as that concept above, I don't care if it lost half of that projected weight loss Click here to enlarge BMW knows how to build nimble near 4,000lbs cars (E60 M5, E38 7-series). I can understand the need to broaden the appeal y softening the suspension, but they act as though the non-M car's road rough previously (when they really didn't with non-sport suspension cars).

I wonder what the resale values will be.

The current 6 series is amazing looking. I absolutely love it, but the price is crazy. I hope they do start dropping weight across the entire line up. Even if it's 300 lbs, how can we get upset that BMW knows weight is a problem/focus point?
