    • Is 480 horsepower stock out of the 4.0 liter M177 turbo V8 enough for the 2015 W205 C63 AMG?

480 horsepower is certainly a good amount of power and that is what Autoweek is reporting the upcoming 2015 W205 C63 AMG will put out from its twin turbo 4.0 liter M177 V8 motor. That is more power than the previous generation W204 C63 AMG had stock at 451 but about equal to its 481 horsepower with the optional P31 Performance Package. Let's say the new C63 matches the P31 W204 and has 481 horsepower. Is that enough?

To hold off the upcoming F80 M3 and F82 M4's 425 horsepower S55B30 motor it is likely just enough. Keep in mind the W204 C63 was rated at 37 horsepower more than the E92 M3 and had a larger motor but due to the M3 being lighter and having an optional dual clutch transmission it was a driver's race with similar acceleration figures.

It looks like history is set to repeat itself as the W205 C63 AMG will not have a dual clutch transmission option and is likely to be heavier than the 3306 pound M3/M4. The W205 C-Class is lighter than the W204 but we will have to see how much weight Mercedes is really able to cut from the C63 AMG. Even getting into the 3600 pound range sounds optimistic.

This next generation battle is shaping up similarly to the previous generation with the C63 having the bigger motor and being heavier whereas the M3 is lighter and relies on efficiency technology such as its dual clutch transmission. The wildcard is another performance package from Mercedes which BenzBoost already confirmed. BMW this time around with a turbo motor though will be able to respond with a performance package of their own as the do on the M5/M6 models.

Brute force versus efficiency? Something in the middle? We shall have to wait and see.

AMG engineers arn't stupid. The DCT isn't everything, the trans they use is fine. And a V8 TT is a better motor to work with if you want to built it up.

        Wrong.
AMG engineers ARE stupid if the C63 doesn't get a DCT.
DCT is everything because it's the best transmission available.
Educate yourself instead of blindly leg humping Mercedes.

This engine will probably crap all over that little 3.0 TT from BMW. Probably will make 600hp crank with just a tune. Dont get me wrong, the S55 looks to be amazing with mods, but I still don't think it will make no where near as much HP as the M177 with a tune and mods. Also, the trans in the c63 will probably take a lot more pain than that DCT in the M3.

True but the DCT is more efficient. It helps make up for the displacement disadvantage just like it did with the S65 versus the M156.

It will get more tune only I do not doubt that. So did the M156. The M3's strengths will be lighter weight, higher redline, and a DCT.

Yes it is. But this car will be just fine without it.

For sure. But at the end of the day. You can sign me up for a c7 vette for the same price Click here to enlarge

Edit: actually, cheaper with all options.

I'll take the C7 too. Different class of car though.

        The MSRP for a C7 with a 7spd stick, Z51, and MSRC is $56k.
Add a set of headers and a custom tune for $2k and you're good to go.
Add a ECS centri installed and tuned for $5,000 and then you have the best RWD/stickshift car money can buy......at a bargain.
With meth, that combination is good for 750rwhp and 9 second timeslips.

But, I already have 9 second toys.
I want a daily driver sedan with DCT and AWD that is smaller and lighter than the S6, while still matching the S6's is capabililty of 12's out of the box, and 11's with some mods.
Is that too much to ask ????

Since C (W205) cars ARE MB products... and AMG version it's a modified MB product; it will get a 722.930 transmission. Only, the AMG SLS that's entirely designed by AMG Gmbh; they can pick an 7g Getrac DCT. Or the Pagani w/AMG V12 biturbo, it gets a Xtrac DCT =)

But, I wouldn't mind it getting a DCT from like Porsche Panamera Turbo or Turbo S 7speed ZF PDK.

I noticed you put a ZERO after the .93 above. Is this in reference to the MCT gearbox ?

Not just a displacement advantage anymore.

Bravo to Benz for making it rwd. F*CK awd!

DCT would have been nice though. We will see if they have any new enhancements for the MCT.

        Nah.
        F@ck YOU.

If AWD sucks, explain the 2014 E63, 911 Turbo S, GTR, Lamborghini Gallardo/Huracan, Audi R8, etc.
I am SO tired of uneducated idiots spouting off nonsense about AWD.
        Get a clue.

...uhh what exactly do you want us to explain about those cars? They're faster from 0-60 because of all wheel drive but are much more boring to drive because of it. All wheel drive adds weight, it adds parasitic drivetrain loss (so less power is available to push the car forwards) it ruins steering feel and often precision (high power AWD cars sometimes exhibit torque steer), etc. I've driven every car you mentioned except the 991 911 Turbo S (driven plenty of 996 and 997s) so I'm speaking form personal experience when I say the rear wheel drive versions of the 911 and E63 are way better, the Gallardo is fun but not that great, and the GTR is a bore.
