    • Audi wants a piece of Tesla - All electric Q8 coming (in 2017) among others

Audi has a strange Tesla fixation. Back in May of last year Audi took offense to Tesla statements and fired some cheap shots at the electric automotive company. Audi intends to borrow technology from the off again on again R8 E-Tron program and place it into other platforms including a lightweight Q8 SUV. This would create an all electric five seat vehicle from Audi to take on the upcoming Tesla Model X but the problem is we would not see it on the market until 2017 at the earliest.

That means Tesla will remain unrivaled for a few years at the very least. Audi is definitely planning on several all electric models but by the time they get here Tesla may already be rolling out their next generation vehicles.

Regardless, a lightweight SUV (the Q8 is expected to shave 300 pounds off the upcoming and much lighter next generation Q7) with a range of 370 miles in all electric form certainly is appealing. More competition in the all electric segment is a good thing for everyone. IF anyone can challenge Tesla, it is Audi.

This will be very interesting to see. Audi definitely has the chops to go head to head with Tesla in the all-electric space.

Them and Porsche are probably the only ones.

Also true. Just think...the next "918" might just be mostly electric, with only a 2.0 TFSI power generator for its Graphene super caps. Or maybe even just all electric.
