    • Elapsed time, trap speed, and 60 foot illustrated well - Modified E92 335is versus a 2012 C6 ZR1 on the 1/4 mile dragstrip

People often do not understand the relation between many of the components that make affect what a car runs on a drag strip. Often someone will say a car runs '11's' as if that gives the complete performance picture. At what trap speed does it run in the 11's? What is the 60 foot? What about the 1/8 mile numbers? Various cars have many different strengths and weaknesses and the various parts of a 1/4 mile timeslip can provide a picture as to what those are (and often the main weakness is the driver).

In the left lane you have an E92 335is running a BMS JB4 and a backend flash. In the other lane you have what is presumably a stock 2012 Corvette ZR1 which is a 10 second capable car off the showroom floor. Both cars have drag radials which on paper means they should both get fairly good traction.

Well, the actual timeslip paper shows that not to be the case. The 335is runs a 11.770 @ 119.18 to the ZR1's 11.602 @ 128.33. The cars run times that are very close but have trap speeds that are very different. The ZR1 is the much faster car although marginally quicker. A look at the 60 foot times for both shows why.

A decent launch from the 335is shows a 1.862 60 foot. The ZR1 struggles to launch and this results in a 2.130 60 foot. If the ZR1 matched the 335is 60 foot it would result in getting very close to the 10 second range.

This timeslip illustrates well how a faster car can potentially lose in a drag race. It also shows how important the driver maximizing his setup is to the end result.

Noted, thank you. My 60' is abysmal at the track so I feel his pain. Did not see the full picture at first glance. I can't break 2.0 with PSS's (especially in winter). Must..resist..line lock

The strip in my city is poorly maintained and open only on average once a month to the public. Also, my rears last approx 3 months as is. Effectively I would need to purchase some slicks with the line lock (and some secondary rear rims as not much meat to be tucked under a +25 19" Volk), which would make those evenings I was unable to make the 3 hour window the track is open that month incredibly frustrating.

At least you have a strip though although that sucks about how it is maintained.

You just swap them at the track, not a biggie.

I had a strip close to where I lived and Thursday night was Student night. So you showed your student ID and Valid Drivers lic and you could go drag race for 10$ as much as you wanted. It promoted safety and fought off street racing.

But some millionaires decided to build multi-million dollar homes up the hill right next to the drag strip. so the political war started and strip was shut down. So instead of a 30 minute drive to the strip I have to drive 3 hours to go hit the strip. Anyways that's off topic.

Nice job in the 335is hitting 11.7. Did you run before that? Also it looked like a wheel hop for the ZR1.

Just because it goes fast doesn't mean you can drive it fast! Click here to enlarge

Thanks everyone! I am running nitto nt555 NOT the R drag radial. I wish they made a 19 inch size that would fit. However with DCT you wouldn't be able to properly heat them up. This was not my fastest time however on the fuel mix I'm running, flatlining in 3rd 4th and 5th ( @terry )- not on map 6 and not adjusting tire pressure I was surprised. I should have dialed in next month, however.
@BuraQ what tire pressure were you running on your Nittos? Did you feel back end moving around quite a bit WOT?

Btw congrats...I was running 29 PSI on the rears, but that was dependant on how well the track is prepped...and yes my back end would move side to side......., I was told it was the open diff that was causing that

Why is it always the strip getting shut down by people moving in next to it? You know a strip is there, why move there?

        It's insanity.

Oh because they're rich and very well connected politically. It's okay though the street racing scene has shot through the roof and the crotch rocket scene is even crazier. The local PDs don't even chase the bikes cause they can't catch them.

But it's pretty normal to have races through the non winter season.

See strips should be open precisely for keeping the public safe and keeping racing off the roads. But they don't actually care about public welfare.

Exactly and student Drag night was the $#@! back in Highschool. (graduated in 2006) Get a bunch of tuners together or kids with mommy and daddy's money and go to the strip and run. I'll pay your damn entrance fee to show you how slow your car really is. It was awesome!

I'm all for seeing what your car runs and stuff. If you're going to run on the street do it on a clear highway or a industrial area so you don't end up in someones living room or killing someone accidentally.

This is one of my pet peeves. People move next to a business or entity that was there long before they were and then $#@! about the noise, traffic etc. There's a reason the lot you built your house on costs next to nothing! Here's an idea-with all the money you saved buying your lot, put up a damn sound wall!

Yep but it's not even done uniformly. I don't see train tracks or airports getting shut down for the 'noise' reason...

Always amusing when we are talking 3L turbocharged engines against 7L supercharged engines.

That the BMW engine does so well is a testament to its engineering.

That Vette could of had 1500hp and still lost to the 335i. Not taking away from the great run the 335 had but that Vette driver can't drive his car well. Look at his MPH and his $#@!ty 60ft.

It's a big trap speed difference. These cars are not close in reality. It goes to show an ET is the be all end all.

Hey now, just cause that run wasn't great, lets not say he can't drive the car, for all we know he just made some changes to it and was dialing things in. Takes time to get consistently good launches down.

It's true we only saw one run. Still, that 60 foot is a direct result of the driver.
