    • Mercedes fights off BMW for the top US luxury automotive sales numbers of 2013 - Will BMW learn from this?

Well how about that? It's funny how things work out sometimes when you achieve a goal that is a by-product of your focus on something else. In July of this year Mercedes stated they did not expect to win the 2013 luxury sales race and also stated they were fine with that implying that BMW fudges their sales numbers anyway. Mercedes instead decided to focus on quality and building the best cars in their respective segments they possibly could.

BMW on the other hand equates being number one in sales to being the best. BMW's philosophy amusingly seems to be, 'if you're not first, you're last.' Well BMW, you lost in 2013. This despite attempting to push out every variant possible to boost sales and possibly even manipulating the numbers.

Mercedes came up with the number one spot without actively trying to capture it. The final tally in the US for 2013 was 312,534 new Mercedes sold or 3,254 more cars than BMW. It is by building better cars from the bottom to the top of the lineup that Mercedes got the sales crown they deserved. Hopefully this teaches BMW a lesson. It likely will not though. Expect BMW to fire back with more BMW badged Mini Coopers to boost numbers.

My M roadster struggled to get double digits. Heck, I had to stop 6 times for gas driving from Myrtle beach back to Pittsburgh.

I like Mercedes as well and it's perfectly fine to have your preference but I just don't understand the game over comment.

Okay, I will concede that it was a little too strong.Click here to enlarge But simply put, I am a strong MB owner after my personal incounters. I still have a soft spot for BMW's as they were my first German car that hooked me, but I will not own one until they really buck up, IMHO.

Besides, MB's fall fasteer in price so I can afford themClick here to enlarge

Still both are nice rides, but MB fits me better.

I agree with BMW not making a better quality car in service and parts and let me explain myself before i get TRASHED here, I own a 2011 335d yes DIESEL the car has been SUPERB except the emissions parts i.e. NOX sensors going out EGR failing at 23k and UREA tank demolished or better said destroyed by the YES the UREA itself and yes I have pics to prove it, here i am AGAIN at the shop for the same GOD DAMN emissions problems UREA tank leaking and some othe BS issues and may I say the BASTARDS have not changed my air filter and Im at 38k why I found out was i bought the JB cowl Filter and my cars AC was not working like it was supposed to be, the factory HVAC sucks and when i made the replacement I noticed the HVAC was blacker than ususal, then I decided to check the AIR filter and to my surprise I had the original ONE!! OK before i get bashed here, the 335d Air intake filter has a layer of cotton material below the air filter and its GLUED to the filter I decided to remove it lets say some 20k before and when I looked into it guess what i found the same God DAMN filter w/o the layer of cotton. so that my experience with BMW fck my 02 Mini was at the dealer I think 3 times at the dealer in 9 yrs WTF!!

First of all, while some may choose to bash, absolutely nothing wrong with what you said, my Boricua friend Mr. PR 335d. The comments reflect your experiences, and I’d argue it’s not the 1st time I’ve seen such comments regarding BMWs.

Which is to say, it’s reality.

Now, short of a time period in the late 90s/early 2000s when MB’s quality dropped somewhat – it’s all on record, when has Mercedes NOT elicited the following two words……………….QUALITY and SOLIDITY?

So, while this car nut consumer still wants and M3 or M4 – or a BMW with a 3.0 L diesel, it seems a bit much to suggest MB trails in terms of quality. Click here to enlarge (What?) At least not on planet earth, where competition brings out the best of all products.

Translation? The game may not be over - MB could get complacent - but Benz is in the lead and can stay on top if they want.

I mean be serious. When the latest 5-series was introduced it appeared so clear those clowns in Munich removed it’s driving dynamics and made it an overweight porker with crappy steering (read: A piss-poor imitation of a wannabe E-Class).

        My advice?

BMW, be yourself, though one must give you credit for listening to the comparison testers and making the M6 Gran Coupe much more dynamic an offering a similar option package for the M5.

But don’t get it twisted. Y’all make decent vehicles, but you need to stay in your “near-luxury but sporty” class..............with your funny math. Remember, it's about how many REAL car registrations happen from your dealerships, not some sales number you pull outta your a Click here to enlarge , uh, never mind.

Go after Audi instead, the flash & glamour company with glorified front drivers.

Benz has high volume cars coming next year. The affordable GLA and next generation C-class being. I see Benz claiming the title again.

I would think so, they are making smart decisions. The difference is Benz is not just rebadging Smarts to inflate numbers.

Bozo very true MB was detrimental and i saw some of its work on a I believe it was a 2006 convertible AMG wiring against my 02 MCS, my Minis wiring was EXCELLENT and MB AMG wiring was lets say TERRIBLE, that said my mechanic by the name of BURU and his crew told me this way "you buy a an MB and we will disown you, LOL"

Like Blackjet stated by MB bringing the AFFORDABLE A class and C-class platforms it will bring more buyers to them and then many can say I OWN a MERCEDES!!!

Precisely, PR 335d.........and I should mention that it took me 'til 2011 to get my hands on an AMG Benz, though I'd been scoping them out since several years spend over in Europe way back when, though they were still kinda aftermarket tuners. Became obsessed after too many to count blasted by me (@ 90-95 mph) on the Autobahn and Italian Autostrada (doing well into triple-digit speeds.)

Then their quality went to crap, recalls followed, and yours truly would eventually snatch up a refreshed 2006 Skyline 350 GT, err, Infiniti G35.........just before your 335d came out. (Dammit!!)

On the contrary, speaking the C-class you mentioned, with standard 4Matic coming on our US models, that will get serious consideration - especially with that 329 hp/354 lb. ft., 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6.
Unless, of course, an M3/M4 or 335d or RS5 or S5 shows me an offer I can't refuse.

Bottom line, as car nuts it is fully permissible to dig & spend our cash on great products from multiple manufacturers.

But if they ain't payin' attention and muck up the quality control, we ain't spending sh............oops! My bad, Boost Bosses.

Last, but not least, did I ever tell you that, as a youngster I had many dreams of being a Caguas Criollos Winter League baller? Long story. And a small world.

        Adios, dude.
