  • MotorTrend tests APR's all wheel drive Super Beetle - This is what a Beetle R should be

The Volkswagen Beetle has awesome retro styling and is a great value but is lacking in one very important area at least from a VWBoost perspective. That area is performance and the front wheel drive Beetle Turbo with 210 horsepower just does not cut it from a performance automotive perspective. While the Golf has a Golf R performance model the Beetle does not have a Beetle R variant yet available. APR wasn't about to sit around waiting for Volkswagen to deliver.

APR took a front wheel drive Beetle, added the rear wheel drive drivetrain from a Golf R, upgraded the motor, and here we are. They added a Garrett GTX2867R turbo which is good for 500+ horsepower but this car was tuned for 91 octane pump. How much power is it putting out? Well, no dyno is provided but it's somewhere in the 400's on pump gas which is how it was tested.

The result is a 12.6 @ 110.2 in the 1/4 mile with 0-60 coming in 3.9 seconds. This car is capable of much more on race gas. Regardless, this is a bad Beetle pulling .99g on the skidpad and weighing in at 3228 pounds.

A 500 horsepower capable Beetle with all wheel drive and a 6-speed. This would sell Volkswagen and maybe get you taken a bit more seriously in the USA. If you want more attention, build cool stuff like this. APR can do it. You can do it. Now sell it or at the very least give us a Beetle R already.

I'll get to drive a mid 12 second beetle for 25K? I'm reading that right?

Anyways badass for APR and I'll get to smell crayola crayons everyday!

No, you are not. The modifications are not included in the Beetle base price.

okay that's what I figured. If it was 25k though that would be the bargain on the 2010s to down in the car buying history books!

For $25k I think a lot of us would want one.
