• 2014 Porsche 981 Cayman 2.7 6-Speed manual test numbers - 3059 pound curb weight

      The base Cayman is currently the value entry of the Porsche lineup with a starting price of $53,550. Not necessarily cheap but it is the value of the Porsche range. For that money you get a 2.7 liter flat-6 motor with 275 horsepower. Not exactly a powerhouse of a motor and that is reflected in the acceleration figures of 0-60 in 5.6 second and the 1/4 mile in 13.9@102.7 miles per hour. This is a sports car more about the driving experience than acceleration but those are weak figures for 2013.

      The Cayman S model benefits from sharing the same 3.4 liter flat-6 with the 991 Carrera big brother although artificially detuned to protect 911 owner egos. It is difficult to argue against one ponying up more cash for the more powerful and larger flat-6 especially considering the acceleration difference in the 1/4 mile is over a second and roughly 10 miles and hour of trap speed. That is simply night and day and a motor more suited to exploiting the superb Cayman chassis that can take a lot more power than Porsche is comfortable giving it.

      The handling figures are spectacular 1.06g pulled on the skidpad. That is absolutely incredible and it is understandable why MotorTrend states the Cayman is the best sports car in the Porsche lineup. PorsheBoost though would opt for the Cayman S and the PDK. There is no denying though the sense of purity and driving bliss offered by a traditional manual and a car focused on the driving experience over acceleration.

      Would that S badge really hurt the wallet that much more considering the $70,160 as tested price here? Up to you to decide.

        Take GT3 motor. Stick it in the Cayman. Collect tears of 911 owners.

        If you haven't driven one of these, go do so now. I test drove one last week before I picked up my M3 and it absolutely blew me away. The manual gear change is so sweet and precise and there is zero doubt in my mind that it is a superior drivers car to the 991 Carrera S I drove earlier this year. I didn't buy a Cayman S because the ride is a little too rough on the freeway (I drive at least 60 miles on the freeway every day sot hat would get annoying) and because my shoulders are too wide for either the base or sport seats but it truly makes my new M3 feel like a Mercedes!

        I'm thinking it should be a trivial task to flash the S motor with the 991 Carrera S' software, so even if you don't want to turn to the aftermarket you should be able to 'unlock' that extra power if you know someone who works at a dealer or whatever.

        Not a problem at all.

        Also keep in mind it's just the bore separating the motors so turning it into a 3.8 won't kill anyone. Oh, and also, I think the GT3 motor will be an easier swap this time around since it's the same basic block.

        The 'R' version will now be known as GTS to match the rest of the family's designations. I doubt it will have the 3.8; would love to be wrong.

        Why don't they just make a limited run of Cayman's with a the GT3 motor? Just super limited. Just do it you pussies.
