      Yes, this is BimmerBoost.com and we have all become a bit obsessed with forced induction and big power numbers. Sometimes we forget just how quick the naturally aspirated high revving M cars were. Here is a great example of all motor capability with an owner taking his bolt on E60 M5 to the drag strip and managing a very impressive 11.579@122.24 1/4 mile run. That is with a 1.790 60 foot on the notoriously difficult to launch SMG III transmission (ESS SMG software helps) not a new fancy dual clutch. Oh, and also with 1700+ density altitude so it is not the weather skewing the result here.

      This is a 5.0 liter V10 with natural aspiration. No turbos, no boost, in a not exactly lightweight luxury sedan. The S85 is capable of going door to door and even edging out the new F10 M5. The advantage for the new M5 being that adding power is as simple as getting a tune and raising boost thanks for the turbos.

      Whatever side you stand on regarding the naturally aspirated versus turbocharged M motor debate there is no denying BMW built some incredibly impressive past M motors. A 5.0 liter V10 revving over 8000 rpm in a four door sedan? The only other place to get a comparable motor would be from Lamborghini and fitting four of your friends in to go for a ride in a Gallardo does not exactly sound comfortable.

        Pretty straight forward. A 3.91 ring and pinion, Evolve headers, a FluidMotorUnion tune and Hoosier drag radials provide the power and grip while a RPI GTS exhaust, deleted seats, light weight battery and a Recaro racing seat help on the weight reduction front.

        The SMG (and DSG in the newer cars) will not allow LC if the gearbox oil is too hot. Try driving the car around in 2nd/3rd at low speeds for a few minutes after running maybe.

        It seems like for me - if I use LC (say, after driving for an hour) - it will not work again until 5-10 minutes of "cruising" around. By cruising, I mean short shifting - and going the speed limit... Click here to enlarge

        On the other hand - as I am sure you know, you can just mash the throttle down and "dump the clutch" anytime you want - just don't think it's the greatest thing for the car though.

        Thanks. The only option after running the 1/4 at a dragstrip is returning to the pits at 10 mph so I guess I'll have to live with it.

        I didn't think gearbox oil temp was a factor in my car since the engine oil (which I know may not be exactly related to the gearbox oil temp but should similarly rise and fall) hardly ever runs higher than 210 degrees F. I was under the impression that the SMG and/or ECU shuts down LC after it senses overuse of the clutch after using LC. Since I thought LC varies clutch slip to max out traction maybe it's worse than the full clutch dump you get when you mash it?

        Regardless of why it shuts down, my best launch was with LC the one time it worked. I would rather have to deal with a little wheelspin and corrective steering imput with a 4500 or 5000 rpm LC launch than an irritating bogging at lower rpms.

        Crazy. Great numbers. Although seemingly lots of work needed to get there. Either way...the S85 will always to me be one of the greatest engines ever made, rod bearings and all.

        If you Google FluidMotorUnion Youtube you'll see the in-car video I took for a previous run which actually was 11.544 at 118.50. That run was in April when it was much cooler and the stacks and dumps were installed. If you notice in my burn-out that the car was bogging badly and even did so on the green light. I didn't use launch control and we think the stacks may have been the issue-maybe giving up some torque at lower rpms so using LC would have helped. Also, we think the trap speed of 118.50 was low and looking at the video it seems I may have shut down a bit early.

        On the 11.579 run in June I did use LC (worth maybe 0.20 to 0.25 sec since my other runs that day were 11.78 to 11.82 without LC) but the stacks and the dumps were not installed, just the stock air boxes. Using LC the car launched hard with the tach jumping to almost 5,000 rpms without any bogging and continued to the 8500 rev limit very quickly in first gear. Bottom line, I think on a cool day using LC the car can post an 11.30 or better. Same cool day situation with the stacks and the dumps avoiding the bogging by using LC and launching above the rpms where the car bogs with the stacks, maybe even a very low 11 is possible. I know for sure next month when I try it again.

        In reality compared to stock at about a 12.95 ET, the bulk of the ET gains came from the headers, the tune, the 3.91 gear and the drag radials-probably 1.10 seconds of the total improvement of 1.41 seconds with the rest from weight reduction, the dumps/stacks, pulley, LC, etc. The point being if you do the first four mods you're in the elevens.

        I am trying to post the in-car video when I ran in the 1/2 mile WannaGoFast Chicago Shoot-out in June where I posted 150.6 mph for the 1/2 mile without the dumps and stacks.

        For an 11.3 you would need a 1.6 60 foot and that is going to be pretty tricky. You'd probably need bias-ply tires to do it.

        I think the gears are helping your 60 foot but hurting your trap IMO.

        Eeeking out more horsepower at this point is going to be tough. You could always bore the throttle bodies or look into the Schrick cams + extending the redline.

        My advice would be to boost it and show some real power.
