• What we know about the upcoming M177 / M178 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 for the 2014 W/C205 C63 AMG and SLC AMG, W205 C63 Performance Package confirmed

Yes, a new 4.0 liter twin turbo V8 motor is coming from AMG as was confirmed in December last year. The internal engine code for this motor is M177 for the C63 AMG version and M178 for the motor going into the SLC AMG. This means that like the previous generation W204 C63 AMG M156 and the SLS AMG M159 necessitating different engine codes for the same base motor there will likely be hardware as well as tuning differences between the motors depending on model application.

As the SLC AMG will be a higher priced sports car designed to compete with the Porsche 991 it will likely get more power and upgraded engine internals. That is simply speculation based on AMG precedent with the previous generation M156 and M159 motors. The SLK55 AMG will likely also adopt the M177 V8 although at a later point. It is unconfirmed if the name will change to SLK63 AMG although that is likely.

It is also possible that the base SLC and C63 AMG will share the M177 V8 while the higher performance version set to go into the 911 Turbo rivaling SLC AMG S will be the M178. M177 V8 output is targeted in the 450-500 horsepower range. With the performance package option raising output of the upcoming BMW M4 to the 451 horsepower range Mercedes may raise the standard output to compete with the heavier C63 AMG as they have a 50+ horse window to play with.

The M178 is rumored to be testing in trim up to 590 horsepower. It is likely that a variety of different tunes are being tested as Mercedes continues to benchmark the car against rivals such as the Nissan GTR.

BenzBoost has confirmed that the W205 C63 AMG will get a Performance Package software option. Mercedes already offered a P31 Performance Package on the W204 generation C63 AMG and they offer an AMG Performance Package for the M157 Twin Turbo V8 motors in 63 AMG vehicles that raises output.

How much will raise output over the stock 450-500 horsepower? That likely depends on the competition. The German turbo performance engine era allows manufacturers to simply play with software to leap frog each other and Mercedes has more room to do so by virtue of their displacement advantage over BMW and Audi as well.

Notice the software leak below also shows the chassis code as C205. Usually a "C" instead of "W" denotes a coupe. The W205 C63 AMG has been spotted testing as a sedan so this is certainly interesting. Interesting as well is the C400 model which will use a M276DELA30 bi-turbo 3.0 liter V6 with 4Matic all wheel drive. The Mercedes answer to the 335 and S4? Sure seems like it.

The next generation M3/M4 versus C63 AMG battle is going to be interesting.

        Sounds awesome.

        And a new engine between the C250 and C300 - C260?

Likely just a tweaked C250 for a certain market, doubt it is an all new motor.

Also some chassis and suspension upgrades. W205 will use Mercedes new MRA (Modular Rear-wheel drive Architecture) platform. A lightweight monocoque structure made out of hot-formed steel that will allow a significant weight reduction. The front suspension is also changing from MacPherson struts to a double wishbone set-up.

What about the C63 AMG all wheel drive rumors?

        Great news. Thanks for posting.
I really wanted AWD, DCT, and the 5.5 turbo.
But, if the next C63 is as lightweight as it sounds, I will happily take the 4.0 TT.

The 5.5 TT would be great and I completely understand. But Mercedes is using this motor for the SLC and it will make its way into the SLK too. With the SLC handling is of paramount concern so a smaller and lighter motor is a good idea

It will have more than enough power and is larger than the competition. The M157 would make the C63 more of a drag car than anything else and AMG is making better balanced cars these days.

If one wants big displacement for drag racing the E63 AMG S is the choice although I doubt this will be far behind due to the weight and dual clutch.

Cant wait to see these beasts unleashed...im sure they'll spank the new m3 in straightline performance, especially after a tune. These engines will have way more overhead and insanely better AMG noises. ///M doesnt know how to make performance engines sound good anymore.

It's going to be tough to mess with that displacement. The M's advantage will have to be its weight. They better make it a bunch lighter but if this comes with all wheel drive...
