It seems Audi may be taking the opportunity to respond to the BMW i8 with a hybrid sports car that actually has some balls along with honoring the 30th anniversary of the infamous Audi Sport Quattro. This may also be a shot at Porsche at the 918 Spyder hybrid creating some sibling rivalry.
Audi is targeting a curb weight of 3747 pounds. The turbocharged V8 under the hood along with batteries and the electric motor have bloated the concept. Apparently a large amount of aluminum and carbon fiber is used but it is doubtful that if this ever hit production Audi would be able to bring it to market with a low curb weight, affordable price, and such an advanced all wheel drive hybrid drivetrain.
The fancier and more exotic this concept gets the lower the chance for production. A shame really, as it is now just being used to show off what they 'could' do if they wanted to. The original concept with a low ~2700 pound curb weight and the 2.5 TFSI motor at 380 horses made a lot more sense and would be cheaper (possibly more fun to drive as well). It would also be much close spiritual successor to the Sport Quattro. We will have to wait and see what happens but this concept is now heavy, expensive, and needlessly complicated.
