    • F80 M3 / F82 M4 testing at the ring shows off the new S55 turbo inline-6 exhaust note - New M3/M4 sounds average? Comparison to E92 M3 S65 V8

It is no secret the switch to turbo motors for the BMW M division has brought along with it some issues that upset M purists. A recent comparison between the classic naturally aspirated M exhaust note in the E60 M5 versus the new turbo exhaust note in the F10 M5 highlighted a glaring difference in sound quality. Do not forget, the F10 M5 is receiving a revised exhaust system so BMW themselves recognizes the exhaust note in their latest M cars has not exactly been up to the standards they set themselves.

Let's be honest, the new M5 even fakes its exhaust sound with synthetic noise piped into the cabin so things have gone a bit off the rails at M. BMW recognizes its latest M missteps so this should bode well for the exhaust note of the new F80 M3 and F82 M4. The video below is the clearest sound yet of the upcoming new M cars.

      Take a listen:

How do you feel? It seems to be a bit more uncorked than the F10 M5 factory note was but still has a low pitched drone sound quality to it. Spectacular? No. Passable? Sure.

Now take a listen to a compilation of the E92 M3 S65 V8 exhaust note:

Is it even a contest? If fuel economy and cost saving matters more than emotion at M these days, so be it. But something has been lost in translation.

A V8 sounds better than an I6?! You don't say!

A naturally aspirated high revving V8 than this turbo I6, yes. A V8 doesn't always sound better.

Even a four cylinder can sound good. This one IMO sounds better than this I6:

A V8 pretty much always sounds better than 98% of the cars on the road. The higher it revs, the better it sounds. Luckily sound is only a small portion of things to consider when buying a sports car, or else we'd all be driving 32V ford powered cars. /end thread.

This is a vast oversimplification. The crank design matters. The size of the motor. The aspiration. The revs. The header design. Exhaust design. Cat placement, etc.

It's not as simple as more cylinders sound better than less cylinder. The F10 M5 sounds pretty bad compared to a lot of smaller motor or those with a smaller cylinder count. It doesn't immediately get a pass because it's a V8.

If it runs, makes lots of noise, and goes really fast, who gives a fly'n F.

Completely agree that more cylinders = better sound. Ever heard a viper? It's sounds like a travesty. Generally speaking, V8's sound damn good though.

No doubt the S65 sounds better, but I don't think it's THAT bad.

Even for a 6, it doesn't sound very good.

It's not bad. It's not anything special though.

I'm torn with this. Some videos it sounds similar to the s54 with the raspy higher pitch sounds, however in this video it reminds me of the n54/55 just not as deep. With aftermarket piping I'm sure it will sound a lot better, but right now I'm not impressed. Personally I like the sound of a fine tune 6cylinder under load compared to v8's IMO the only time the v8's sounded great was at start up, idle, and low speed.

It sounds weak IMO. My Berk system blows that exhaust noise out of the water many times over.... Anyways, looks like it handles great.

        The V8 sounds way better!

Its awesome that you used my friend Mo Aseeri's M3 vid to compare LOL. I'll point him to this thread. Bahraini M3 FTW.

honestly who gives a $#@!. The old V10 M5 sounds like sex and the new TT V8 is average sounding. But this isn't a concert, it's an M Car and the new TT V8 $#@!s all over the old V10. PERIOD. Get over it M fanboys, turbo motors are here to stay and the F82 M4 is going to smash the e92 M3. PERIOD.

I don't think in the F80 video that we ever get to hear the car rev out much past 5k rpm or so. Maybe this test session was all about low end torque, transmission programs, or whatever else that would make them drive around shifting early.

No doubt a high-rev NA V8 will sound better than a turbo anything that's not winding out to redline.

Shouldn't the comparison videos at least been with a stock s65 exhaust care, if not of the s65 m3 testing around the 'ring. Not saying it would change opinions but it would be the most fair.

Why are we comparing a video of a stock test mule with questionable sound recording equipment to a production e92 m3 with a aftermarket exhaust? We get it, the v8 sounds great....so does a 350z.

This car will smash the stock v8 m3, in fact I bet the m2 will too
