Car and Driver did the comparison between the two and ended up picking the Beetle. The Mini makes a strong case for the win however offering a lighter curb weight by a whopping 480 pounds, quicker acceleration, and better handling. It also gets better fuel mileage by 6 miles per gallon. Car and Driver also states there are few more mechanically involving cars. So why in the world does it lose?
Apparently the Beetle wins because it is more comfortable and softer. So, it's not as much fun to drive but it's more comfortable. Well, these are supposed to be fun in the sun cars are they not? The Cooper S gets punished for being too sporty for its own good but the Beetle is rewarded for being softer, heavier, and slower? You make sense of it.
These are both great cars but it seems the Mini got robbed of the win here. If one wants the sportier car, it's the Mini. If one wants the more comfortable drop top, it's the Beetle. VWBoost would have the result reversed.
