    • The difference between a tuned naturally aspirated BMW V8 and V10 - An E60 M5 with Evolve Stage 2 tuned S85 V10 versus a tuned M3 S65 V8 on the highway

Great video here showing the difference in naturally aspirated potential between the S65 V8 and the S85 V10. What makes this interesting is both motors are very similar even sharing parts like the pistons and rods as the 4.0 liter S65 V8 in the M3 is based off the 5.0 liter S85 V10 in the E60 M5. It really is the same motor with two cylinders lopped off. This video illustrates what that extra liter of displacement means in naturally aspirated form especially up top on the highway.

Now, this E92 M3 is a 6-speed manual which if the M3 has a poor driver will be at a disadvantage versus the SMG in the E60 M5. A DCT would definitely fair better and it is unknown what tune is on the M3. Clearly not a very strong one or Evolve's own.

The Evolve Stage 2 M5 simply walks away. The car has in addition to the Evolve tune a full RPI GTS exhaust, RPI scoops, and BMC filters. The M3 is only stated to have the "unknown" tune and that it is a 6-speed manual. The video clearly illustrates just how much stronger the S85 is versus the S65 thanks to its displacement advantage.

The M3's weight advantage does not mean too much versus the M5 in a high speed roll where top end horsepower simply rules in this 30-200 mph sprint. I have personally run my bolt on DCT M3 versus a Dinan tuned Stage III M5 with RPI scoops from a roll and the result was much closer with the M3 having the advantage from a stop that the M5 could not overcome. Up top though in a high speed roll, the S85 simply will always have more horsepower as it is capable of 122-123 mile per hour trap speeds with full bolt ons versus about 117-118 for the M3. Assuming great density altitude of course.

      Video below.

holy crap where did that M5 go? to space, the m3 driver had NO CHANCE!! whatsover on this, did you see how that M5 jumped of the track on the 17 second mark wow!!

I loved my old E60 M5. If only it had a DCT. The SMG was so clumsy around town, but it really shined when driving with a performance mindset due to the firmer shifts in S6 mode. All other circumstances though, a DCT is better hands down.

I am honestly shocked that the M5 walked that M3 so damn hard. Wow... It was a lot less close than I expected, that was ridiculous top end on that M5.

Crap mods on the M3. It should be much, much closer.

On the Evolve Tune the S85 pulls much harder than stock past 100 mph. In a video I posted here in another thread, I ran a 09' CTS-V that runs 11.63 @ 124.69 on street tires.. In the vid he has me by a good car and a half from 50-160 mph. Had the highway not curved in his favor, I would have tied him and been passing at 160 mph.. Had we gone to 180/190 I'm confident I would have been out front.

That's what I thought... It almost didn't seem like a healthy M3 (I thought even a stock M3 would fare better to be honest) - but I guess it's hard to say... I never ran one before, so this is news to me.

        Are you SMG or Manual?

These cars both m5 and m3 are so finicky that its not easy to see that you give the m3 a 6 speed for starters. Then you put the m3 driver in the wrong gear. If he has older spark plugs he can't hit nowhere near timing and who knows what "tune" he has. ALl of this goes for an s85 engine too.

Give the m3 a Dct, catless, evolve/ess tune and same fuel and both cars having spark plugs fresh or the same age than we are looking at the m3 pulling up to 100 and than the m5 creeps....than walks... than runs by 150. But way closer than this. I make runs regularly with my m5 buds and I take them to 100 easy peasy. After that the v10 surges past me!!

It's not Evolve's job to make the M3 look good.

did I say it was? Second time you put words in my mouth so not sure what the deal is. Re-read and than see I said nothing of the sort. I am saying that any given race between two finicky engined cars can have a blow out or a close race, especially given introduction of mods.

meh Get a 4 door e90 m3 and drop in the S85 motor then stroke it and F/I it. Then you'll have a monster!

Nice video. All I have is BMC filters/scoops on my M5 and I walked a stock 6 spd M3 pretty hard on a 40 second gear roll. So I would think a tuned M5 would do even better. This was bus lengths, looks like the M3 gave up early.

You can make more than enough power with the S65 so the an S85 swap is pointless especially considering it adds weight and takes up more room meaning you can't run as big of a blower which is the source of the power anyway.

Is it me or did it look like the M5 literally disappeared at the :42 mark ? I know it's a crest but, even when it level's out, you DO NOT see the car anymore.
