  • 261 mile per gallon Volkswagen XL1 to be available as a lease only, not coming to the USA, and limited to 250 examples

So Volkswagen teased us with their awesome 261 mile per gallon XL1 concept only to reportedly not be bringing it to the USA. That is fine as the last time the pricing for it was talked about this very, very green car was to cost in the $1XX,XXX dollar range. To make matters worse it appears the six figure car will only be available as a lease. That means very high payments and no ability to modify or play with diesel hybrid drivetrain.

It's certainly a cool idea and a nice engineering exercise but if this car which will be limited to 250 example does make it to the USA VWBoost certainly won't be broken up about it. A 47 horsepower two cylinder diesel paired to a 27 horsepower electric motor giving 0-60 in 12.7 seconds does not sound the least bit exciting to drive.

Nice for Volkswagen to score brownie points with the eco crowd though. Which is all this really amounts to at 250 cars that are lease only and not available worldwide. But hey, green PR is green PR right?

I feel like VAG just loves to make things that never arrive in the states.

It be useful city driving. Specifically in NYC. Outside of that it's just for being able to say you have something that your neighbor doesn't, and more or less can't have.

Can't argue that. Still looks pretty sick though.
