      A little while ago a debate raged on the BenzBoost forums regarding the horsepower output of the CLK63 AMG Black Series which came out as a 2008 model car versus the brand new C63 AMG Black Series. BenzBoost was able to obtain courtesy of Renntech six dynojet run files from two C63 AMG Black Series vehicles and fifteen CLK63 AMG Black Series run files from six different vehicles. These all come from the same Florida dynojet.

      Mercedes themselves rates the CLK63 AMG Black Series at 500 horsepower and 478 pound-feet of torque. The C63 AMG Black Series gets a 10 horsepower bump on paper to 510 horsepower. The C63 AMG Black Series weighs slightly more yet also traps slightly more in the 1/4 mile than the CLK63 AMG Black Series stock for stock. A difference of 2/10's and 2 miles per hour as tested by Car and Driver. The only way for this to take place would be if the C63 AMG was making more power, which the dyno results below support.

      Let's start with each CLK63 Black Series run from each car, car one through six:













      The highest peak horsepower figure is 406.9 wheel horsepower. The lowest is 390.0. Average wheel horsepower works out to 400.2 wheel horsepower.

      Compare this now to the six runfiles for the W204 C63 AMG Black Series from two cars:





      The highest peak horsepower figure is 437.3 wheel horsepower versus 406.9 for the CLK63 AMG Black Series. The lowest is 432.6 versus 390.0 for the CLK63 AMG Black Series. Average wheels horsepower for the C63 AMG Black Series comes out to 434.8 wheel horsepower. Compare this average figure to the CLK63 average figure of 400.2 wheel horsepower and it becomes abundantly clear there is a horsepower discrepancy between the two cars.

      This discrepancy makes sense as the C63 AMG Black Series has been shown to tarp higher in the 1/4 mile stock for stock. Additionally, Mercedes themselves rates the car higher. Furthermore, the M156 V8 in the C63 AMG Black Series features stronger internal engine components than the M156 in the CLK63 AMG meaning a more aggressive tune is possible which Mercedes clearly applied and insinuated with the higher horsepower rating.

      All runs are in SAE correction on a dynojet. Thank you to Renntech for the graphs.

        Very cool of Renntech to provide you with this data. However, I don't see how stronger internals make up for the extra 30 or so wheel hp. They are not differently designed internals, just made of stronger material - so that leaves me a bit confused. It would seem to me that the factory tune on the C BS is just better and pretty much on par with what you get in the aftermarket. Also, do you think the MCT transmission has anything to do with it ? I'd like to see what a tune only CLK BS puts down...my guess is it would be very close to the C BS in stock form and if so, then I think we have our answer.

        Yes the tune is better but these internals can also cope with added cylinder pressure better. You can make a clk63 match this na.

        Sure, but the compression ratio for both cars is the same. And we've seen supercharged CLK 63's running the stock bottom end handle the boost just fine. So I really don't think the increased strength of the C BS M156 rotating assembly has anything to do with it - I just think it's a slightly more aggressive tune. The M156 in the heavier S63 and CL63 were both 518hp so we know they can squeeze plenty more power with just a tune on the identical motor.

        I wonder if the power difference comes down to improved drivetrain on the CLK BS?

        What part of the drivetrain on the CLK BS are you referring to ? The C BS actually has a better more efficient transmission...

        Of course it's the more aggressive tune but these internals can better cope with a more aggressive tune. The SLS internals are clearly stronger at the same compression than the non-SLS internals just look at the result with boost and how much more boost the SLS bottom end is capable of supporting.

        Weistec keeps the compression ratio the same for the built motor setups yet they make much more power.

        I meant to say perhaps the C BS drivetrain has less drivetrain loss to the wheels compared to the CLK BS.

        Ah, perhaps the MCT is a bit more efficient but this is going to be fairly close between the two. The losses won't be so low as to account for 30 whp.

        Really tuners would need to break down the two stock tunes for us. From what I have been told, the C63 tune is more aggressive stock for stock.
