    • World Motorsports creating a twin turbo kit for Mercedes 63 AMG Motors (M156/M159) - Prototype SLS AMG Twin Turbo Kit

This is a rather interesting development in the Mercedes-Benz AMG performance scene. Truth is, World Motorsports is a newer name and one not seen on BenzBoost before. A Mercedes SLS AMG Twin Turbo kit certainly is quite a way to make an entrance. They already seem to have the turbos mounted but hardware is only one part of puzzle. What about the tuning? What about the impact of the torque on the SLS dual clutch transmission? These are just some of the problems posed.

World Motorsports is located in Torrance, California and Benzboost was invited out to see what they are up to. A very generous offer as most companies won't allow anyone to visit when they are preparing for a show (SEMA) and wrapping up very difficult work. Apparently they are going to try to make it to SEMA in Las Vegas which is less than three weeks away. Not a long window but it would be impressive if they were to make it.

Plumbing is said to be 80% complete at this point and the car should be hitting the dyno soon. BenzBoost will hopefully be able to provide more info shortly after stopping by the shop. For now, enjoy the development pictures below.

There are pluses and minuses. Turbos have bigger power potential but I'm a huge fan of the twin screw powerband on the M156. It just feels amazing to have power everywhere and through the redline. No lag, no waiting, it's just different.

In theory on paper, maybe but rather no. The UGR TT V-10's have the advantage of their layout allowing much larger turbos as well as their longer powerband.

The M156.M159 would need much larger turbos than what I see there and it looks fairly tight as is.

True, that off idle immediate torque from a PD blower is pretty astounding and is perfect for the street. However the associated heat issues from continued use at high revs is an issue. And I'm sorry cause I'm sure this will offend quite a few people...but an ice tank in your trunk is a ghetto band aid fix. But, when used on the street, it's almost a non issue. I'm of the mind that it needs to work at full potential all the time if need be. And that is where turbos are superior since full boost is made at high revs. It's a tough call and the Weistec setups are proven...that is a big plus when considering FI. Building a one off is one thing....making a kit that is totally reliable and affordable to a guy who is getting a second hand M156 is another. At the end of the day it's going to come down to price point and reliable hp. If they can make it more powerful and less expensive than what is on the market now, they will do very well.

For the street I really like the positive displacement, a lot. What most people really are looking for when they want power is torque. It gives exactly that, everywhere.

The track performance is an interesting point. Chevy does well with the ZR-1 and Ford with the Ford GT. So it can work.

Both will create heat but turbos likely won't get as heat soaked. It would be cool to do a comparison.
