    • Dual clutch versus Manual - A DCT E92 M3 and a manual E90 M3 race on the 1/4 mile drag strip

BimmerBoost member LostMarine met up at the ATCO dragstrip in New Jersey for some fun runs and a comparison with a manual M3. The blue E90 is a manual and the black E92 M3 is a DCT. Videos are from inside the E92 M3. Both cars have similar modifications with airfilters, Turner Motorsport test pipes, and mods to the OEM exhaust system. The DCT wins both races easily and the difference is quite large at over half a second and 3+ miles per hour. Videos and slips below.

It isn't an excuse, look at the trap. You have an automatic, you just load your torque converter and go. Launching a manual is much harder.

Stop saying you had issues and go top these traps/times. I mean you aren't beating M3's but sure you can improve.

i will deff out trap that 6mt that's 1 and two with amount of TQ and how low it starts it's not as easy as you seem to make it, my tires are also 255 which is very skinny for this much TQ i had to baby the thing at the start.

Definitely? Without more mods, I don't think so. I mean the DCT hit 115 and the manual doesn't have less power it just needs a better driver. Your car is not as quick or fast.

With drag radials the width isn't a big deal, it is more about sidewall.

Sticky but correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure I am right..

        Isn't the 1/4 mile record for a stock E9x M3 12.3@114.9 in a 6 speed car. Short first gear = better launch.

This is a cool comparison but doesn't say much unless we know how the 6 speed driver drives.

        ---

        another note:
Both are nice cars - I have the "same" (color/trans) e90; looks like DCT is worth what is claimed, egh?

I had these cars mixed up this entire time. I thought the blue had DCT - just watched the video, and promised myself to never post about one until watching again. Click here to enlarge

        Sorry for the confusion.

Just give that MT M3 to that Ranger guy, the one who ran 10s@130 in the stock Z06. Dragtimes in Manuals are very driver dependant IMO. I still think the DCT would run a little faster, but not a 3mph diff.

The DCT is always going to be faster then the 6spd. Closer gears and faster shifts for the DCT.

Yes that is the record, somewhere around there.

However, this was a direct comparison. Same time, same place. Interesting to see, right?

True, this also shows how good a driver in a manual needs to be to even compete with the DCT.

As ERM mentioned, that is Bart@AUTOCoutures car. He doesnt really drag it, but it is one mean sounding street car.

I will put vids up of the 'ACM exhaust' we make. Fraction of the cost of the BMW Performance exhaust, and more sound to boot Click here to enlarge

+1 on the exhaust - im very close to swapping my gintani rear section for the ACM...way too much drone even with the sport, I was shocked the ACM rear doesnt drone even with a catless xpipe.

Bingo. And at the end of the day, machines will always be better than humans. I'm the biggest 6MT fan in the world but I'll still admit that DCT > 6MT. How could you hate something that performs flawlessly time after time? But nothing beats the fun factor of a 6MT.

I own a N54 135i and I love driving the DCT M3! On the track it's always in the right gear, and on downshifts it sounds incredible. When you're on the track with the DCT M3 you're more focused on your line and driving technique than worrying about shifts. I've had this debate many times with different people and the best thing is to go drive one. There's a reason why F1 cars use this technology. It's almost like not wearing track shoes to run a race, that's where my manual fits in...2nd place! LOL!

Thanks. Sticky if they made my car or even the 1M with the DCT both would be a serious problem!

For some reason BMW is not offering DCT much. Why?

Is it an option for 135i at $200?
