    • R8 4.2 compared to the new 991 Carrera S Manual - Porsche trounces it

      Insideline recently tested in the new 991 Carrera S and has now decided to pit it against the R8 in a comparison. The R8 4.2 V8 is not a slow car by any means. The problem though is that this is 2011 where a Porsche 911 with a 3.8 liter 6 cylinder eats it alive. Kind of embarrassing in a way for the more expensive R8 with a larger V8 motor that revs higher to be easily beaten by the Porsche 991 Carrera S that traps 4 mph higher. Not to mention this is just a 6 speed manual version of the 991 as the PDK will make the gap between the two even larger.

        How is it fair to test the Carrera S against the R8 V10?

        The 4.2 is what is aimed at it. Fortunately for Audi the facelift is coming as getting beaten by the Carrera S is just kind of sad. Even the previous generation Carrera S was faster than it.

        It is likely that even the standard Carrera will be faster.

        It was outdated when it hit as the 997 Carrera S was whooping its ass. Porsche just slightly improved the motor and it is beating the 4.2 V8 with ease.

        Let's be honest here. 2 less cylinders, less displacement, lower crank HP rating, yet it is trapping 4 MPH higher? Without the PDK? I mean, its embarrassing for the R8. The fact you mention a V10 as being needed to take a Carrera S (let alone a GT3, turbo, or a GT2) is just kind sad for the R8 V8.

        Well the R8 V8 is a sad car hence why I said who would buy it? Why not compare base model Carrera to base model R8? If you're gonna compare 'upped' models then compare them respectively.

        That is kind of bad. The R8 chassis was sort of old when it came to market and it just goes to show you how fast one can go from being relevent and ground breaking (so to speak) to getting beat by a car with two less cylinders, etc. Click here to enlarge

        The R8 V8 was never really fast to begin with...

        You know what's sad? 12.9@109 is what the stock F10 is running and it's a 4 door sedan that costs half as much.

        Very true... but it is using turbos. Still, just goes to show how slow the R8 has gotten with the V8.
