• RENNtech M278 twin turbo 4.6 liter V8 ECU tune upgrade - +70 horsepower, 530 crank horsepower for C218 CLS550

RENNtech is proud to announce our latest ECU performance upgrade for the all new M278 engine currently in the C218 CLS 550, E550, CL550, S550 and other upcoming Mercedes models. We have been hard at work refining our performance tune for these engines and are pleased to announce our latest ECU upgrade. Itís clear that the 4.6L V8 biturbo engine from Mercedes is certainly underrated from the factory and though our extensive testing and R&D; our ECU upgrade truly unleashes the performance lurking in the M278 engine.

RENNtechís ECU upgrade for the M278 offers huge gains across the entire RPM range; increasing crank performance numbers an additional 70 HP and 80 TQ. This translates to an astonishing 530 HP and 606 lb/ft of torque at the crank! These numbers are factored at a conservative 15% drive train loss.

The performance increase is instantly noticeable at the bottom end and continues throughout the biturbo engines broad powerband.

Here is the CLS 550 (C218) dyno sheet:

Our CLS 550 stage 1 ECU upgrade is available now for $2,740. For additional information, visit out product webpage:

It's coming the RT E550 Coupe...The M278 engine platform it's more affordable to go fast; it just needs some suspension upgrades for handling, cooling upgrade & AMG63 brake size for stopping =)

        Any progress on this project?
I believe MBZ increased the front brake size for 2012 e550c Which AMG63 brakes do you propose to use?
Are you going to test more than one ECU tune?
        What about a LSD?

Sorry for all the questions! I'm very interested in your project.
        Thanks!

        Good questions.

I would expect an LSD option relatively soon as it is definitely needed.

The E550 Coupe blue efficiency it's an interesting platform. The newest RENNtech S/CL/CLS550 M278 tunes are making more torqueband & horse powerband than a stock non-performance CLS63 M157 (non posted graph/info yet); on the RENNtech E550 Coupe since it's a lower end variation class it's a possibility that some hardware (not software) are different that makes it's short of aprox. ~20whp on a dynojet stock compared to a S/CL/CLS550 M278. Even if the same RENNtech E550 tune vs. RENNtech CLS550 tune it's applied & tested... so it's valued or worth more for an upgrade hardware wise imho. We can expect hardware testing it's currently on the works for RENNtech to make it just as close/competitive to a E63 AMG performance package =)

I'm confused: Click here to enlargeMBZ rates the CLS550 at the same hp (402) as an E550C, but the S and CL are rated at approx 20hp more (429).

Some tuners have implied that the M278 is the same in S,CL,CLS,E with possible exhaust differences.

Regardless, thanks for the update. Looking forward to your updates.

Congrats to RENNtech on their latest improvement to the M157 engine! Impressive platform with amazing upgrades.
Will there be any other upgrades to the M278 RENNtech tune?

This was posted on another site today. Can anyone from RENNtech verify what is shown here? Thanks

        "Renntech Tune For Cls550
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just spoke to george at renntech and got some results for the Renntech ecu tune. A customer ran a s550 biturbo with the tune and without.
        1/4 mile Bone stock 12.89
        1/4 with tune 11.73.
With the Cls being lighter by a couple hundred pounds we should be looking at the same or better results. That is crazy we would be looking at a 0-60 time in the high 3 seconds! Just a little slower than the amg."

Well that's crazy, the heavier tuned S550 is only 4/10ths slower than the tuned CLS63 (11.3s, reported by multiple tuners)? Whoa.

        I don't think the S550 ran 11's. I heard it was 12.5 or so.

Haven't had any answers to my recent request on this site, but have a good report from another site regarding the RENNtech ECU tune on a '12 E550C.

"Just got my ECU back from Renntech, dramatic difference. Had the dealership handle everything, charged me 1 hour labor. Figured it was cheap insurance, gets me out of the loop should any issues come up. Great service, great results. Dealer assured me there were no waranty related issues tied to the upgrade. Actually pretty comfortable with this and everyone's approach. Geez, glad I went to fat 19" tires. In sport mode the car will really get your attention. The change in "tip in" is pretty obvious."

Thanks for posting, obviously we want to build up our M278 presence more and more. The M157 is more popular on this site right now for obvious reasons.

By the way, the guy who installed the RENNtech tune (post #40 above) got interested in the tune after I posted the RT press release at another site. I learned about it on this site: so chalk one sale from Benzboost (and me).Click here to enlarge
